  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Raven.... Everything Just Changed.

Of course having a exchangeable lens mount costs more money.

There are many more mechanical pieces that go into an exchangeable lens mount, Many more electrical interfaces and internal adjustments that are incredibly complex, that not only cost more on a pure part level but take alot longer to manufacture, test, assemble and calibrate.

I'm certainly not surprised that the actual manufacturing and QC cost of a Raven with an interchangeable mount system would be higher than a Raven with a normal fixed mount.

But assuming that Raven uses the same processor architecture (and consequently, codebase) as the other cameras, and could be made physically compatible with the existing mounts, I would have thought that a big chunk of the R&D cost of making Raven work with the existing mount options had already been spent. Therefore I am surprised that the increase in volume on those mounts wouldn't have more than made up for a somewhat narrower margin on the Raven brain.

That's not a criticism, especially since you've already narrowed the margin quite a bit increasing the sensor size. Just a comment.

Personally I doubt a new Scarlet will shoot 7K. 6K seems to be the more realistic path with higher frame rates in 5K. 8K stills would be awesome though.
My other guess is Epic will go 7K with higher frame rates at 6K.
Both in the DSMC2 body

But then again I could be way off

Hahahha I like your style
Alot of the Bourgeois will never admit it , but The EF mount ( at least our version of it ) technically is a better mount. Sure there are some great lenses that only come in PL mount ( that is changing fast though ) , but the same can be said about some great EF glass, and you can buy adapters to adapt almost everything else to EF mount, including Nikon. The PL does have a greater sheer strength ( which isn't necessarily a good thing ) and the PL doesn't require a twist to lock ( again, that argument can go both ways. )

I like your style ;)
EF mounts are smarter. They are smaller, lighter, and offer the option of powered internal motors.

The Raven won't come in a PL mount version. For those that must have PL now... you need to look upwards to our other cameras. Or wait for the new Scarlet, which is going to be one badass disruptive little motherfucker.

In these discussions when we quote "k" it would be also informative to refer to the aspect ratio. Mentioning image circle is also useful.

For instance I am interested in:
10k 16:9 43mm which seems worth the effort for delivering 8k TV and 4k x 4k giant screen.
6k 16:9 30mm which seems top class for 4k TV and widescreen.
3:1 compression up to 60 fps.

Probably best achieved with different sensors.

O don't worry... The Scarlet engineering team deep inside the RED bunkers are not sitting on their thumbs shaking in a circle with their hands held up to their foreheads crying woe is me.

Scarlet will see its Magnum Opus @ NAB. Or maybe March 1st. Or maybe whenever Brent takes that pain in the ass virus he implanted on all my internet connected devices that makes my system reboot as soon as I start typing Scarlet- <poof>

Thx for the info Jarred I can now plan accordingly.

I think this maybe my ticket!

Raven is pretty impressive now that we got a bump to 4.5K out of nowhere.

If you're gonna shoot everything at 16:9 it's nothing big but if you plan on doing 2.0 - 2.1 - 2.35 - 2.39 it's a pretty big deal, less cropping to get the the width.

Makes sense why it's fixed you guys really wanna hit an attractive price point which is great for those new to the Red family. Allot more bang for the buck compared to when I jumped on board back in 2012. Very cool for kids who are ready to ditch their DSLR for something designed for a professional environment and make their reel look that much better.

My ears will be peeled, not a long time from here til NAB. Hopefully you'll have some teaser presents come Christmas.

Jarred what price range will the new Scarlet be at so I know how much to save from here til then?

As a Scarlet Dragon owner, this raises two and a half questions.

1. Is this next iteration of Scarlet going to have the same sensor, simply enabling more of it being used at higher frame rates? Will there be additional gains in DR or color science due to higher processing speeds?

2. Does this next iteration of Scarlet represent, an upgrade "tax", so to speak, whereby to stay in the upgrade path for the next generation of sensor beyond Dragon, I must invest in this next iteration of Scarlet? I ask this because based on statements made previously, I understood that moving to the the Dragon upgrade from MX would secure the pathway to the next sensor generation. I am concerned that to stay in that path at this point, I will be obliged to make an intermediate investment in something prior to the next sensor. I realize the next sensor may be beyond the camera system itself perhaps, but always understood Red would have a path to it from what I have now.

Brant.

From what i understand so far the Scarlet will get a face lift with the new DSMC2 Body which will be the middle ground between the Weapon and Raven, and yes i think they mentioned that the Dragon sensor is here for a while. As it stands now Your Scarlet Dragon still out performs the raven. I believe they will offer a upgrade trade in for your scarlet dragon to get the new version (wifi, pro rez, and yet to be announced resolution) with all the cordless features and benefits from the new body type.

2016 Big Year

2016 Big Year

Raven, Weapon, 8K Weapon, Scarlet. Lots of new inventory for 2016

\initiating kill sequence on Jarred's internet service until NAB\
You have your work cut out for you Brent…he's a slippery character...

The NAB timeline for the "official" announcement for the Weaponized Scarlet Dragon (we all know we'll get a lot of hints prior) is perfectly fine for me. Plenty of time to get our Dragon investments paid off before jumping into the next latest-and-greatest.

Are any Raven buyers looking at the optitron group buy? It's seems like a match made in Heven or are you thinking fool control?
