Hey guys, I'm extremely close to putting in my deposit for RAVEN.

I did some investigating last night looking at a fully ready to shoot bundle vs. getting the pieces/modules I would need to be "record ready". Keep in mind this is as minimal as you can get in terms of my functional requirements.

Basically it came down to this:

RAVEN Brain only w/ media bay - $5950
Plus it's nice the brain comes with the AC adapter so I can charge the below RedvoltXL on the module.
4.7” LCD - $1,450
REDVOLT XL Module - $1,150
Mini Mag 120GB - $850
Redvolt XL - $350
RED Station Red Mini-Mag (gotta import my media somehow ha) - $195
Handle (this could be removed as it will be on a tripod most of the time) - $150

Completed package, pre-tax: $10,095.00

I realize I'm going from a brick to Redvolt XL this route, but my requirements don't really call for a brick. Plus I'm assuming (emphasis on that word) RAVEN will be easier on power with its compact package.

Am I missing or overlooking anything? Any drawbacks to this vs. the Base I/O V-Lock bundle (again assuming that my requirements are minimal just as long as it's shoot-ready)?

Thanks for the input!

Modules aren't stackable, so this setup would leave you with no ability for monitoring (for remote focus, etc). Of course if that's not a requirement then it's not exactly an important consideration.

EDIT: Apparently the XL Module is the only module that can be stacked.

Oh wait... U need a base expander tho

Is that required? I don't really have any need for monitoring output other than the 4.7" monitor (which I thought is a cable-less connection onto the brain directly).

Right, thanks. And correct - other than the 4.7" touch monitor that will be all I need.

Are you recording sound separately? If not, you need base I/o or base expander.

Correct. The built-in scratch mics are sufficient. I film mostly action sports set to music.

If you are filming action sports, which is what I mostly do. The redvolt xl, will probably give you an hour of camera time. If you went with the element technica v mount plate, you could get third party larger v mount batteries, at a lesser price then 350 per, and with more wh. As you are going to need more then the one battery. I also have a very minimal kit with my scarlet. I plan to keep my 5" touch, get base I/O v lock, as we use wireless mics etc quite often, 240gb card, if you are shooting slomo for action sports, 128, won't last to long. And I have v mount batts already. Good luck with your kit.

or for 9,950, just get the base I/O package, then you have 1k to get the reader, and maybe two 160wh+ v mount batts. Then you have the option to grow into it more with the base I/O

Thanks for all your input. I've decided to go with buying each piece individually.

Now my last question is - would it be better to place 2 orders? 1 for the RAVEN deposit and 1 for the rest of my modules (power, display, etc.)? Or just place all items with RAVEN preorder in the cart at once..

Thanks!

Skip the redvolt system and go with V-mount/Gold mount

Does the Base I/O V-Lock Expander charge Bricks with the DC plugged in (and Brain off)? The Redvolt XL Module charges XLs in this manner and I would love to not pay for a Brick charging station if possible...

I was told that you can put a base expander, and then an XL module on the Raven...

Yes, you can. Expanders are not stackable, but the Redvolt XL module is not an "expander," and thus, it can be attached to the back of any expander. If you take a look at the Weapons in the wild, many have this configuration. Google Red Weapon images, and I think you'll see a few.

Does not charge.
