  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Raptor Vs Gemini at lowlight

I'm a helium owner and I would like to switch to raptor or gemini, I'm curious to know wich one perform better in low light between raptor and gemini (set to low light). At 1600 or 3200 ISO, wich one is clear with a good balance of dynamic range? Helium is becoming old and noise..i know!
 
Raptor is at ISO 1600 as bright as Gemini 3200 and at 3200 as bright as Gemini 6400.
but if you use Gemini in LL you still have slightly less noise than the raptor has.
 
Gemini under exposed skin tone looks like a beef liver. Funny thing is that people are praising Gemini LowLight capability only based on ISO. What is that worth if you cant have people in the shadows?

Curious what you mean by this. Is your camera somehow old and has become noisy in that something that used to work well doesn't any longer? If that's the case then you need to get the camera fixed....Helium is a tool in the tool box like all other cameras and has strengths and weaknesses. Mine (like my other cameras) works as well as the day I got it from RED.
 
Gemini is a bit better, but I Raptor is better in so many other ways. Gemini is of course cheaper if you buy a used one so it depends a bit what your purpose is.
 
For low light use Sony, it's not even close. Just like in the old days you would use a completely different film stock for daylight exteriors vs night and lowlight. Red has always been great for daytime stuff but nothing beats Sony for night and lowlight.

Just curious-- have you paired Sony with Red on a job (and just used the Sony for low light)? Are you recommending going Venice (or even the old F55/F5), or is there a good case for supplementing Red with A7S III/FX3 (or even FX9/FX6) for low light sections?
 
I looked into the F5/F55 and if I didn’t have my RED One MX and Sony A7S, I’d probably pick one up. The Sony A7S changed the game for low light and now that they’re up to the A7S III with the FX30/FX3/FX6 using the same sensor tech, there’s not much left to be said for using the F55 for low light scenes anymore despite it having a stellar high end Sony image in general. Like the FS700/FS5/FS7, I was surprised that I would probably only get a bump or two in ISO with the F5/F55 over my RED One MX and the RED One MX was still slightly better than Dragon for low light performance so one can definitely appreciate all the advances that have been done with this new generation of cameras, especially the Venice 2 which is a “Wow” camera for sure!

For reference, check out the show “Resident Alien” which uses the Gemini and see if that does the trick for you as they have many low light and dark landscape shots, it’s also hilarious so you can enjoy researching!

If 8K resolution is a factor for you then by all means go for Raptor, otherwise the Gemini is quite nice. If you might consider a Sony camera for extreme low light then the FX6 is currently the top option until they come out with a replacement for the FX9, which itself would probably be 8K I would think.
 
i dont understand how can someone like a under exposed skin tone of Gemini? Or Sony FX6? yes thees cameras are awesome to shoot night car chase scenes, night city scapes and dark streets but human skin (if properly underexposed ) looks like a plastic bag
