Anyone in the LA area going to be in the rain soon? I need a beta tester.

I just finished the beta prototype of my red raincover. I'm really happy with it although I am making some changes already to the final production model. Here's some specs:

-All major seams are completely sealed (no stitch holes for water to seep through).
-Works with LCD in multiple positions.
-Works with EVF (with Element's new tube mount)
-Works with Primes and Zooms
-Access ports for battery, menu's and CF Cards.
-Arm access for operator to hit run button.
-Large clear windows for easy viewing
-Allows firm grip on red top handle.
-Works with ET accessories.

Yes I know I know, pictures. I took some but they aren't the best. Will try to get some good ones up here soon.

Also, the COOLER........

I made a Cooler for the RED since it seems to have more trouble with heat rather than cold. Sent it out to beta tester in the AZ desert and here was the response (paraphrased).

We were shooting 8 minute takes in the desert in 90 degree heat with no cover and in direct sun. I got a temperature warning pretty quick after it heated up. I put the cooler on and within moments the warning was gone and we continued with no problems the rest of the day.

I had no idea if it would even work at all so I was excited about this response when I got it.

If you have a raincover that completely seals this camera, then you'll sure need that cooler with it!

It doesn't seal the camera inside like a splash bag. The major seams are just sealed that would face up (toward the rain).

Chris keep me posted... I fly to NY from here ( Israel) May 30... then out to LA June 10... we will be shooting out at Burning Man. do you think this will work also as a dust cover?

Mike

Hey do you want a betatester down here in the UAE.. it was 43 degrees c. in the afternoon 3:00pm here today. I'll even buy the thing if you think it can handle that kind of heat.

Here is a quick snap of the main cover. More photos in the next couple weeks showing how the complete system works. It actually rained the day I got the cover done so I took it outside and no water got through but that wasn't a shock. There will be quite a few changes to the production model, but I figured I'd give sneak peak of the beta prototype because people have asked.

As you can see, I used waterproof zippers for CF card, menu and battery access. There is a handle access point so you can get a firm grip on the handle (which works with the complete red handle with ET risers as well as the Element Cheese Stick.)

Price and Availability will be later this week.

Looks great Chris.

"As you can see, I used waterproof zippers for CF card, menu and battery access. This is great to know and answers a few questions that I would have had otherwise.

I look forward to your price and availability.

Hi Chris:

Will you be making a streamlined version to accommodate a minimalist handheld setup? Probably just EVF, two top mounts with top handle and top handle extension, belt clip battery pack on belt (only need to cover connecting cable and CF card. No rails, side handles or etc. I think what you have created is great but I think it would be too bulky when shooting super lean. What do you think?

As I mentioned, there will be changes to the final product. I will keep handheld usage in mind when doing the final tweaks this week before mass production. If there is a demand for something even more compact than my first cover, then yes, I'll make another one if people need it.

I'm guessing the cooling pack looks different?

So how does the cooler work ?
Is it active (actually cooling the camera) or passive (just protecting from the sun) ?
Do you have to add some ice or something to make it cool ?

Nils.

It's an active cooler and yes it looks much different than the rain cover. It fits onto the top rods and holds gel packs. All of the protos of it are out at the moment, but I'll try to get a picture of that soon.

Chris,

Do you think the cover would work well in desert environments. Where wind wind blowing around sand and dust is a concern?
