  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

On the "Child of Yak" tread, it is mentioned that RED Raid drives will NOT work in such hights - I need to know if this ist true and WHY?

I'm leaving on Thursday and was not planing on using CF because I find the Drives overall more reliable!

IS IT TRUE THAT RED Drives will NOT WORK IN HIGHTS!?!

cannot speak for Red but I know all hard drives are NOT hermetically sealed and in fact require an air cushion from the spinning platters to float the head above....the head will not even come out of park without sufficient air pressure.

RED Drives are rated to 10,00ft and they can go higher, 10,000ft is just a limitation with most common environmental testing. I have successfully used drives at elevations of 14,000ft +/- a couple hundred ft. Roughly 4300 meters. It's not so much the altitude that will mess with the drives, but any fast changes in height to get to there and back. Watch for condensation and temperature fluctuations.

Best to have the drives on location and acclimated for some time, do some tests, then shoot.

I would still recommend CF or RED-RAM would be even better.

High altitude can always affect sensitive electronics, there are lots of factors that can come into play. But the two biggest factors affecting RED Drives are cold temperatures and vibrations/motion. I will use RED Drives at high altitude without much concern, but if the temperatures are below freezing, I worry. Never power up a frozen hard drive, you're just asking for trouble. Edit> if you're going much higher than the elevations I've mentioned, I wouldn't count on the drives working. They do have their limits.

Weird that you find the drives more reliable than CF. What cards are you using?

Hey Brian,

The spinning drives in RED Drive are rated to 10,000 ft., I used them for a long shot at 3,200m with no problems but I had CF cards with me for safety. I would go the CF route.

Thankx! I'll get som CF as back-up. Most will be shot round 3-4k, but we have a few days at 5k:(

I was referring to all the download issues you can get with CF cards and the readers, also camera readers going bad - RED drives have just simply worked for me.

I have used red drives at high altitudes and cold temps and most in air tight/soft/insulating bag with silica that absorb water and protect against vibrations and shock.

The drive is just like a baby, it need to be dry, warm and in a soft place :)
