  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RADEON VEGA Frontier Edition as Resolve eGPU?

Any Recomendations for the new RADEON VEGA Frontier Edition as Resolve GPU in the new SONNET-Box or the ECHO EXPRESS PCI-Express 3.0 Chassis?

What about the MacOS compatibility?

Best Ronny

FE looks like the sweetspot 16 GB HBM2, 10 bit color in openGL (you will still need a declink for 10 bit color in Resolve) all the pro and the gaming drivers upto 12,5 TFlops 32 bits for $999. Maybe some more info on the BM forum.

The new iMac Pro will have VEGA https://www.apple.com/imac-pro/ so Apple is working on drivers (don't know if they will work for FE).

SSG is amazing (Jarred was amazed) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nuFGUVg0U9U&feature=youtu.be&t=1h2m1s but $ 6.999.

I have a FE in my Mac Pro (internally).

As per normal with PC Cards, you don’t get a boot screen but the card works out of the box in High Sierra.

The fans never go completely silent, but there are no driver/performance issues.

Found this on the net:

Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2017 - OpenCL mode doesn't work out of the box. It makes your footage blue.
The only workaround I've found so far is to disable the accelerated display settings in the debugging console (hit CTRL+F12, find the "debug database view" in the "console" options, then tick GF.DisableAcceleratedDisplay to "true").
Once I figured that out, I've been able to edit/playback 1080p ProRes HQX footage with Lumetri Color and other effects enabled with no problem at full resolution. :D

Anybody else having issues with VEGA FE? What about other NLEs?

Thanks for your answers and input.

So it needs High Sierra for an external GPU.
Are there any real-world experiences with a new MacPro Trashcan running a Vega GPU external over TB2?

Thanks Ronny
