  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

R3D from Peter Lyons Collister

hahaha, rim light! That's a good one. I can't even see her face.

Perhaps a hard bounce on the eyes, a little blue added and you get a decent day for night?

Okay, so now I know I'm wasting my time with this conversation.

I like the mood of this one.

Although the tech at work here is staggering I think my favorite part of this picture is the somewhat enigmatic 'Mona Lisa'ish look on the child's face. There is so much subtlety here both in image and subject.

Matt Ryan,

I'd like to see if you can pull off a day for night look in Resolve. Anyone else up for the challenge?

Curves are gain and ISO is gain and really they are the same. Gain is gain, period - these are just two interface methods of reaching the same effect.

You guys seem to not realize this. ISO 20 000 with curves to bring it back down is not technically different from IS0 400 - and ISO 400 with curves that brighten the image a lot means that some parts of the images will actually be the exact same thing as ISO 20 000. It's not amazing that they look the same. They should look the same.

It is interesting that you can reduce gain so much and have well exposed hair from what was a rimlight. But I am often amazed by similar effects in MX as well.

Yes, what Robert said

Had to Chime in here. Started from 50iso Daylight 5600 with a -3 stops on top of that to preserve as much fine detail in the kids hair and to push as much as I could. Graded in Resolve 10.

Thanx guys) waiting so long for some RAW Dragon footage to appear... will do my best if some more stills or footage arrive soon!

3rd from the bottom looks great.

It's so hard to quote posts with images this large in a 3" vertical window... Those images must be glued together.

What do you think Will?

Impressive. The 3rd and 4th from the bottom look pretty damn convincing. The 5th one is a fail. A little bounce in the eyes and it's there. I'd like to see this in motion. Pretty nice stuff.

I guess the thread is going a bit off task here. It's funny how a little artistic creativity can make you forget about all the possible technical disappointments. Good work Matt.

A bit off topic…sorry…had to take the opportunity to post this Will. Thank God you are wearing a fishing hat and I'm not totally crazy. I see this every time. Makes me laugh.

Back on topic…can't wait for my Dragon. Stoked with these examples.

Hhahahahaha. There's the fish! I guess it's appropriate for RU since in a sense I do a lot of finish here on this forum.

To me Dragon definitely has some new magic that really pops after spending some time with it. Beautiful skin tones and green looks green ) the obvious evolution from MX

and as others have stated.. this is only the beginning, new color science is going to be interesting to say the least

Next I am going to ask my friend Gunliek to post another r3d still which has much more info in the skin tones... mY late stepfather who had so many layers of skin tones... The digital sensor can read through so many layers of skin and it is how they present those is what makes a difference....

Stand by....

And herein lies the double-edged sword of publicly posting images in early stages or a camera release, when there are not many cameras readily available and anticipation and curiosity is at an all-time high. Some people want to see perfect images - some people want to see images breaking apart - over/under/stress-tested.
Very true. Plus we're trying to judge them on compressed 8-bit computer displays.

I'd like to see Peter post these on the Cinematographer Mailing List. There's been a lot of discussion over there about real-world dynamic range from Epic, Alexa, and Sony 4K cameras, including much discussion of their infamous "candle test."
