  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

R3D Demo in Media Composer 5

Mathieu,

Hi, thanks for that. What would be the comfortable resolution for playing back on MXO2 mini? 1/4?

Another nice trick will be that you can "duplicate a clip" (not the media) and change R3D settings on that clip and each will retain their own. Nice for looking at different "looks" in context if needed.

Michael

Nice, in FCP that was impossible.

Is it support stereoscopic 3D or we still have to use metafuze for that?

Stereo 3D in Media Composer currently works on both L+R eyes being in the same frame as either side by side, over/under, etc. and need to be prepared that way either in MetaFuse or other device as a previous step.

Michael

can we use MXO2?

Hi Michael,

Do you work for Avid?

If so, MC5 looks great. Our assurance package should see it arrive soon and it will be implemented on our next series. The new AMA features are really going to save time when importing POV GoPro Cams etc. Thanks!

On a side note, could you please get your guys to look into fixing some bugs in Interplay? Particularly on the Mac version. It's just not possible to run Unity and Local storage with Interplay. It's kinda necessary in an offline/HD online situation. Another issue is that, when configured this way, Avid does not automatically create the extra 1, 2, 3 etc folders inside the main MXF folder when the 5,000 file limit is reached. I was astounded to see 37,000 files in my folder recently!

We have had a horror 5 weeks on a tight turn around reality show and have finally found a whole bunch of problems being caused due to this hook up, thanks to our Avid vendor who was able to replicate the problems in their own workshop.

Otherwise though, really liking the way Avid is handling things these days. Keep up the great work.

Hi Michael,
Do you work for Avid?

Michael not only works for Avid, he was one of the leading designers of the Film Composer and he (with 5 others) has won an Oscar (in 1999) for the concept, design and engineering and continued development of that Avid Film Composer. He also manages www.24p.com, by the way.

So he's pretty much legendary in my book.

[blushing]. You're welcome.

Yes, I stumbled into Avid over 20 years ago as a young filmmaker and stayed as the whole technology side of things just fascinated me. It fit my 50/50 left brain right brain personality. I don't write code, am not an engineer - although there are times I want to dive in and do something like that. Outside of Avid I produce and edit feature films - got to keep the yin and yang going.

Michael

Just playing arround with the Trial version and i´m really impressed.
Is it possible to change playback settings if you don´t want to render DNxHD but just work with the R3D in Avid. At present i´m not getting 25fps playback speed after AMA import but i cant find the setting to change to a 1/4 or 1/8 res.

Sorry, quite new to Avid.
Manuel

Click on the green/yellow, green/green, or yellow/yellow icon at the bottom of the timeline to change performance characteristics. For 4K sources, yellow/yellow would be 1/8th debayer.

Michael

I got the MC5 and MXO2 Mini going at green/yellow pretty smoothly.

Michael-I use both FCP and AVID extensively and am very glad AVID has finally started to push forward on some of these things (timeline tools, etc.)

One thing I noticed is that once you bring something down to the timeline, you can't then access the R3D raw changes, is that right? Is it only source clip based? It seems a much better way would be to be able to correct things Raw in your timeline rather than your source window.

I've been having to match frame, find bin and then make the change. As you said, you could duplicate a clip each time, too, but that is about 4 steps per clip. Any suggestions?

Thanks for being here, by the way. Great to have someone here from AVID...

There isn't a way to modify the Source Settings of a clip from within the timeline (which frustrates me in DS also).

However there is a way up update an entire sequence to look at changes you've made to the source clips - which would be helpful in many cases.

Edit the sequence as usual, then modify the Source Settings of any clip(s) you want to change. Then right-click the sequence in it's bin and choose "Refresh Sequence" and then "Source Settings".

In that scenario if you weren't happy with how one setup was looking in your sequence you could locate one take in the bin with Match Frame/Match Bin and then select all the clips from that setup, apply a new look, and then update the sequence. And by parking the playhead over an adjacent shot (say the reverse angle) in the timeline, and using the "Apply" button while working with the Source Settings, you're able to get a side-by-side view of the shots.

The ability to go back to source settings from the timeline as well as from within the color corrector is something that fell off the list for the first implementation of R3D. I am hoping to get it into a future version of the application.

Michael

Cool. Obviously building in RAW parameter controls into the color corrector would be the best way to do it. That way you could do a one-light using the source clip correction and then do a more thorough on per clip later.

Also, we really need a white balance picker tool.

Thanks!

Kevin
