  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

R2E LEMO to eSATA Cable Available Now

Yes David we need a "Sigma" I totally understand RED as they are doing but Sigma has sold a bunch of Canon bodies! Hopefully someone will eventually find the hack to put other cards or drives on RED Bodies, or RED will relent with caveats about liability.

I've had amazing results using the R2E cable especially as alternate to the firewire 800 option which fails constantly on the Red Drives.

For MacPro users this will be a big jump in downloading speed. For MacBookPro users not so much.

I need to see if there's any difference on the newest generation of MBPs.

Brooke are you using a MacPro on your DIT cart?

Calling it a "handshake" may be completely incorrect terminology. There's no documentation on it. It'd be nice if it were publicized, but I don't expect it to be. It'd be nice to use non-RED media [fully understanding the risks we'd be taking]. Or, for example, what if the drives in a RED DRIVE fail? I'm sure RED will replace them for a cost, but it'd sure be nice to slap some 320s in there and have a near-triple capacity RED DRIVE for half of the repair cost. That sort of thing. My inner hacker'd enjoy it at least.

I'd love to try it too.

Along those same lines I was thinking about this earlier, and I'm thinking that RED will probably release a Pro RED drive that is made up of 500's, not that anyone would record 1TB on one drive without backups, but just because as time goes on and technology advances, you'd hope to see a speed increase.

Just to be clear, if you swap the 160GB drives out of a RED DRIVE and try to use it with build 17 or later, the camera will recognize it as unsupported media.

On the fence?

On the fence?

For anyone who is on the fence about buying this cable ..... jump into it.

I had a hard time swallowing the cost of this cable and it made me push off the purchase. But when I got the call to work a short feature, I figured it might help.

Holy $#!t What a difference. :yikes: I was about 60GB into a drive and figured it was a good time to offload, gave the drive and cable to the guy who was taking care of the transfers and walked away. About 15 min later he had the drive in hand and told me it was done "a few minutes ago". On the next offload I wanted to see what the transfer meter said for myself. Another 60GB transfer and it said "11 minutes to complete". All transfers were done on a MBP!

Love my new R2E cable, cost and all!

BTW the other camera owner said he was picking one up ASAP too!

Hello everyone:

I was also very skeptical of this cable, I bought one at Cinegear and have used it for a couple of weeks now. It is a real time saver. I use multiple mac pros on set and they cook with this cable. I highly recommend this to everyone!

Use the correct protocol when plugging it in to insure proper mounting of your drives.

plug esata into your computer, then into red drive, then plug power cable in...once transfer is complete, reverse the order.

good luck.

guys i have one question:

i red that having a esata backup drive and a macbook pro this cable does not help so much because teh 1xlane of the express card will be full using 2 sata device..so for use with macboock pro is still suggested teh fw800 for the red drive,

but,
what about if i have already one esata port on my laptop (HP elitebook) and i add another one using the expresscard?

that should give me more speed than connect the red drive using the fw800?

PS:having enough bus (like in a mac pro and pcie 8x sata card)how many MB/s is this cable faster than FW800?

Thanks

G

I need some help please.
I bought one of these cables last month to help me on a feature film that just wrapped last week.
We tried everything & every way to get this cable to work...nothing at all.
I have tried to contact Cool Gear for several weeks, nothing.
No response to my many e-mails, no way to contact them through a telephone.
If you guys from Cool Gear check RedUsers, PLEASE contact me and lets figure this out.
Other wise, I have an expensive & pretty cable that simply sits in a case.
Has anyone else encountered this?
Did you find solution?

I have a MacPro 17" laptop, use a eSata adapter into the Mac's PC slot....always power up the RED drive with the Red drive power supply....I own 2 x Red Ones, & 4 x Red Drives..and have over 100 Red shoots under my belt..I know what I'm doing...is this simply a bad cable?

I am in the same boat as Jeff.

I have tried my new cable with four different Red drives (320 & 640) and three different drive power supplies on my Macbook pro with Sonnet Tempo eSATA Pro card and no luck. Drives will not mount. Is this a bad cable or is there some special sequence you have to follow to get this thing to work.

I know everything else works.

Hi Dustin,
After swapping my cable with a new one from Cool Camera Gear company, and they said my original cable was fine..and finding I had the same results with my new cable I gave it to our DIT who played with it for a while and reloaded/updated the driver for my Griffen eSata express card...and THAT did the trick!!!
It works GREAT now!!
Try to update your driver...dump your original driver.

Has anyone ever gotten the R2E cable to work with the new Red Builds or Fixed Red drives? I bought this cable and have never been able to use it.

Cool camera gear said they were working on a fix, but I have heard nothing.

Dusty

Dustin,

I've been using the R2E cable for quite a while. I have used it with all of the newest firmware builds with no problems. I haven't had to get a Drive fixed, so i can't speak to that.
