So there will still be a number of R1's out there in the world after RED unleashes the DSMC hordes. Be if from people who couldn't afford to trade up, did stage 1 or 2 or what not.

What do you expect will be the market trends with the existing R1's? Will rates dive even more? Will no one (commercial projects) want to shoot with it? Will some people prefer the beast they know for a period of time? Will it continue to be a tent pole in indies?

What are your predictions?

**** possible this should be moved to the RED one threads****

Hi,

On the assumption that many people shoot with a Red One because they perceive it as the latest & greatest camera. Once Epic & Scarlet start shipping Red One will no longer be cool. I am sure film students will not want to use yesterdays camera.

Stephen

speaking as a student of film, I want any camera that can match my level of creativity and ingenuity. The red one will be just fine for many years to come, yes some will want only the best, but many will be very satisfied with the exceptional quality the Red One offers. I doubt that Red has fad based clients who will only buy the newest and best and forget all the rest (at least I hope so).

I will use my Red One with M-X for as long as possible. When the day comes that nobody wants to use it anymore then I will put it in a glass case along with my titanium 'R'.

The F900 or even HDV cameras are still getting jobs these days so there's still plenty of time for the Red One to be in the market. That said, we will upgrade to Epic to put some distance with the Canon offer and because that's the format I want to shoot my feature film with.

The F900R did surprisingly well in the BSC non shoot out tests. Probably will be around for a long time to come.

4k isn't the "standard" yet, let alone 5k. It is A standard among other standards for some markets. However this is exactly the question at hand. How many people think like Stephen?

Will shiny and new, higher rez, smaller form factor etc... kill the rental and commercial market for the R1 either in volume or price? The answer is yes... but how.

When it comes to personal projects there is no doubt that you can create QUALITY work with the R1. Especially once a mx goes in it.

Hi,

I still shoot more 35mm than anything else so those are not exactly my thoughts, however it's what I hear every day.

Fair enough, how many people think like what Stephen is describing?

Stephen as you claim all the time here that everything is better than R1 just because you missed to buy it in time.

Now it's too late and you dream about Epic, Scarlet, or Milky-Way, Vodka, etc,...

The game is over and you are pissed not on yourself but on R1 that is getting M-X upgrade right now.

It tells more about you than about anything else.

As Kodak & Fuji are still in business there is no hurry, in any case there are probably 25 RED Ones in Switzerland (4 with P+S mounts) not being used at any one time, 2 x 900R's, 1 x 900/1, 1 x 900/3 & 1 Viper to put things in perspective!

Who will want 4K when 5K is the standard.

Me. As David Mullen pointed out in another thread, just because something else is coming along, it doesn't mean what we have now will be completely redundant for creating moving image.

I can say with my hand on my heart, that if I purchased a Red One, as it is now, I would use it for YEARS to come. The Red One/Mysterium makes big budget images when handled and treated correctly, there's absolutely no denying that. 4K is yet to be the standard, and we're still living in a world where the majority of projects are DI'd and output at 2K. With Red One resolving at around 3.2k I don't see any issues there.

HDV and other now redundant technologies in the world of indie cinema are a complete non point. They simply don't offer what the Red One does.

I just want to make films, I'm not absolutely anal about image quality so long as the image serves its purpose, and the equipment allows me to take advantage of using standard cinematic techniques. The Red One ABSOLUTELY achieves that goal, and I know there are tens of thousands of other people that feel this way too.
