EDIT: RED ONE #8 has been leased out to Perry, THANKS!!
Hi guys,

it should come as no surprise to you, that because of Steve and my long time alliance, renewed recently with EPIC M8,
that I am now offering a True Piece of RED History... ;)

Steve used his other Red cameras most of the time, using Red One #8 mostly for private use,
so it only has ONLY" 138 hours of operation ;)

Includes: Camera Body with Original PL Mount, CF Module, ET Top Studio kit, Red Top Handle & Red Top Handle Extension.

Please make your offers via Email only ; ketchrossi@ketchrossistudios.com

*Lease Option to Purchase agreement applies.

As Ketch mentioned, I only used Red One 0008 for special occasions - thus the camera only has 138 hours of operation. But in those 138 hours lies a lot of Red history that #8 was used for - world's first Red 3D footage (9/2/07), world's first underwater footage (9/14/07), and many more "firsts". Bottom line: This is not only a historical Red serial number camera - but it was used for some of the most historical footage ever shot with a Red One camera.

I chose not to upgrade #8 to MX because I was at the head of the line for Epic, and I thought the next owner of the camera could make the choice on whether to upgrade the sensor to MX or not.

I originally bought four Red One cameras - and I used the other three cameras for most of the regular shooting me and my crews did - reserving #8 for special "firsts" and occasions. I love this camera - but due to the extreme mobility of my work, and limited space, its time to place #8 with another good owner who will use the camera, then retire it to a place of honor in their studio.

My good friend and alliance Ketch has graciously agreed to manage the sale of #8 for me. I'm not looking for an astronomical sum for #8. Please bring offers above $22k directly to Ketch via email and we'll see what can be put together. Please - no offers to on this thread - place them directly to Ketch via email.

Red should get it, belongs to the first 100, legend..

Yes, it belongs to not just the first 100, but also carries the legacy of the first 10 shipping Red One cameras...making it even more of a legend :thumbup1:

That said, its in as new condition and only has 138 hours of operation because I used my other Red cameras for most of my shooting, saving #8 for special "firsts". It will be a great camera for field production for many more years - then can be retired to a place of honor in a museum - or someone may choose to retire it to a museum right now :-)

Hi,
As you have the EPIC M , does this means that the EPIC X Stage 2 option for this camera is executed or you will keep the EPIC X also or does the buyer gets the option to get the EPIC X.
Thks
Harcharan

The Epic M program is completely independent from the other Epic sales programs. What is offered on this thread is a Lease to Own Agreement for Red One 0008, with the lessee taking possession of the camera upon payment on the lease, then taking ownership of the camera after I have received the Stage 2 Epic X camera stemming from the execution of Red One 0008. I will be keeping that Stage 2 Epic camera myself, so the lessee/purchaser of Red One 0008 is getting just that camera, not an option to buy the Epic .

The above said, the lessee/buyer of Red One 0008 is getting a lightly used (138 hours), historic Red One in near perfect condition which will have years of use looking forward, and will grow in collector's value every year. Its a great camera and investment.

There should be a student discount for us poor students ;)

There is of a sort...along with the camera I'll supply the lessee/buyer with free consulting on mobile hybrid usage techniques and setups :-)

This is a common situation, a guy wants to sell something, but he doesn't know what it is worth. It is worth whatever he can get. But, how much is that? You could auction it off at Sotheby's or some other such business, and maybe, depending on a lot of factors get the maximum, or you could adopt a different approach. You could say to yourself, "Do I want to give it away?', answer, NO. "Would I take $50,000 for it?", answer, YES. But, no one thinks it's worth that much. Now you just think of sums from $12,000 to $25,000, you keep increasing the amount until you get to a sum where you say to yourself, "Yes, I would sell it for that, but not a dime less", add ten percent. Publish that figure, see if there are any takers. If there is a buyer you sell it, if not you keep it. Bear in mind, the value of this item is dropping. You can buy a new RED ONE MX for $25,000. So your market is those who value the "historical/collector" value of #008. Numbers #001 - #007 are in existence. Would such a buyer even want to use it for photography? Did you upgrade the soundboard? That would lower the historical/collector value. Bottom line, for a collector, it must be pristine. My advice, take the money and run.

George,

Thanks for the input. In this case I do know what Red one 0008 is worth, I have a very deep understanding of Red cameras and accessories, and I've sold hundreds of cameras and accessories over a 30+ year career. I also understand fully the dynamics of the current pre-owned Red camera marketplace, as does my associate Ketch Rossi who is kindly handling this sale for me. Ketch has brokered Lease to Own and sale agreements for over 75 used Red One cameras in the past year. In conference we decided to "test the waters" for Red One 0008 by not specifically quoting a price. You'll notice that we did set a lower limit of $22k USD for offers.

The camera only has 138 hours of of operation, is in mint condition, can be a front line working camera, can be a collector's item, or both sequentially. This is far and away the most historical Red One camera ever offered for sale on the open market - but its a pristine working camera too. If someone wanted to keep it with the original sensor, it still has years of working life left. If someone wanted to upgrade to the M-X sensor and work normally with the camera, that is an option. IMO the camera has more collector's value with the original M sensor.

I'm reasonably motivated to close a Lease to Own agreement for the camera. At present I would seriously consider an offer of $25k USD for the camera.

Hi,

Surely this is 008X , from memory there were 25 named cameras, then the first 100 cameras then the replacements so I would say it's the 108th camera Red made or the 133rd if you count the named cameras.

Best Stephen

were the x's new cameras, or upgrades of the originals?

As you'd guess I'm well aware of Red history - I lived through it as one of the very first Red One camera owners. Shortly after the first 100 production cameras were shipped Red gave us owners the option to send them back in for various needed upgrades. The upgraded cameras were shipped back with an "X" behind their serial numbers to differentiate them from the original stock cameras. Virtually every Red One camera owner in the 95 cameras after Jim's SN 1-5 opted for the X upgrade. They'd have been fools not to, because the upgrades were significant. From that point on Red One 008X assumed the identity and legacy of Red One 008. Beyond that, almost all of the Red camera production "firsts" achieved with 0-08 and 008X were done with 008X. It carries the heavy Red history pedigree - thus I've always simply called the camera Red 008.

If in fact those first shipping Red one cameras were indeed replaced buy whole new cameras, then those original ones don't exist anymore, except Jim's SN 1-5. If they don't exist, then the ones that replaced them, the X cameras, assumed their historical significance and collector's value - they carry the same serial numbers (except for the X).

As for those 25 pre-production city named cameras made before the original Red One cameras, I owned two of them ("London" and "Hollywood") for years until I sold one of them ("Hollywood") off. I still own "London", so I'm quite familiar with that part of Red history too. Those cameras were not "shipping Red One cameras", they were pre-production cameras.

The fact is there has never been a production Red One with a lower serial number offered for resale than mine right now - and quite probably never will be.

The original first 100 had a different PL mount collar, not the newer, adjustable back-focus one. Also had a different audio board, the first upgrade of two. I had mine "upgraded" in Jan '08, and then it was named #0096X.

My memory's a bit fuzzy, but I believe that was the case.

I'm sorry, Steve, but this back and forth with Stephan Williams has me confused. i think i have the same question as Michael Hastings. Is camera number 8x the actual same physical camera as number 8 with upgraded boards or parts on it, or is it an entirely new camera with the same serial number, with the x added? It's pretty confusing.
Rob

The first 100 cameras were completely replaced. RED may have reused some of the parts that came back to them but for all intensive purposes the cameras were totally replaced. However, as Gibby has pointed out, these new X cameras assumed the identity and legacy of the original shipping cameras. I don't believe the first 100 cameras were saved and I doubt they exist. I would be surprised if any of the firs 100 customers turned down the free upgrade to fix some pretty major bugs in the camera.
