I did some checking through my notes and emails, and as Emery mentioned, the original 100 cameras were replaced by new cameras. There were lots of significant upgraded items in the new X series cameras - like C.J mentioned the new PL mount with adjustable FFD, better audio board, and lots of other goodies. Jim owned serial numbers 1-5, and I don't know if he bothered to replace them. But to my knowledge every other serial number from 6 to 100 gladly accepted the replacement cameras. I also don't believe those original serial number cameras 5-100 even exist anymore - and since they were in circulation for only a matter of weeks its like they never existed.
Cross out the original serial number 6-100 from the equation and circulation, and in circulation you're only left with the 25 pre-production city named cameras (2 of which I own or owned), and the new serial numbers 6X to 100X in circulation. So, of the production Red One cameras now in existence or left in circulation this camera of mine for lease/sale is only the third serial number shipped to the public.
In the case of my R1 008, as mentioned almost all of the early Red camera "firsts" done with my 008/008x cameras were done with 008x. Because I bought three other Red One cameras besides 008 (London, Hollywood, 700) me and my crews put most of the hours of use on the other three cameras - 008X is in as-new condition, has only 138 hours of operation (all of that use by me personally), has never been rented out (none of my Red cameras have been), and is naturally eligible for M-X upgrade. I didn't have 008X upgraded to M-X because with the early Red customer I have I knew I'd be buying early Epics.
Any commodity is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Who am I selling this camera to? It could be:
1) A real world shooter who wants a pristine condition camera with ridiculously low hours to upgrade to M-X, use for years, then retire it to a place of honor in their studio
2) A combination real world shooter/collector who wants to shoot the camera occasionally as is (leaving M sensor), then retire it as a collector's item
3) A pure collector who wants to buy an extremely rare Red One camera, which will probably remain the lowest serial number Red One camera ever offered for re-sale
I hope the above clears up some of the questions. For any of the Type 1, 2, or 3 buyers of the camera I described above the price is $25k USD. Inquiries about the camera should be emailed to Ketch Rossi at the email address supplied earlier in this thread.
