  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

R.I.P. Shake

Nuke has already "replaced" it... and if I'm not mistaken it was Ron Brinkman who left Apple to join the Foundry where he took his background in Shake to develop Nuke.

Still, for a $500 application that once cost closer to $50,000, it was and will always be the best compositing application that Apple offered. For those who had the honor and pleasure of working on it back in the Nothings Real days, they got to see it evolve a lot and sadly devolve as Apple began to abandoned it.

Wonder if Apple has or will take down their Shake forum?

Uh... 2006 just called to remind me that Shake was EOL'd back then. Shake hasn't been updated in nearly 3 years and was officially discontinued with that last update.

But yes, R.I.P. Shake, you were a far better application than Motion will ever be.

Never used shake but was waiting for an update and well hey!an update!

Was shakes interface better then motion?because I really can't see myself ever using motion,AE is just so much more fun when it comes to self teaching...

If it still can do some magic, why not use it, like future R1. Rhetorical

Moment of silence for Shake.

Yes this was expected for quite some time, but there was always that rumor about its replacement called Phenomenon. The recent release of FCS feels a lot more like a .5 update than a full release (after 3 freak'n years), and this combined with the official removal of Shake just makes it seem even more likely that Apple has very little interest in its Pro apps, which pretty much made Apple's fame. Many are moving towards Nuke, so if Apple has a card up their sleeve, they should have played it quite a while ago.

Shake is a true compositor. Both Motion and AE have compositor abilities, but they're not even close to being in the same ballpark.

I agree about your .5 view of FCS update. But the EoL of Shake and with Snow leopard on the horizon, all this could also mean that a new major thing is coming.

I dont really buy that whole "Apple is not interested in pro apps anymore".
The latest release of Logic for example is brilliant.

And for Apple to buy Shake just to trickle down some of its features into FC (Smooth Cam) or Motion does not really make sense.

Just wondering, what's some cool stuff that you can do with shake?anyone got some examples?the fact that a lot of people are saying they're going to hold onto shake makes me wanna see what's so good!
Is there planner tracking in it?
I'm just worried I'll get it and it'll just be a dead thing on my desktop...and if this "big thing" doesn't come and motions meant to be some sub for it...just wanna make sure my moneys safe on shake...

Took the words right out of my mouth.

I think there is a plan...

Shake has been EOL for a while now and their are custom versions that are 64 bit that we will never see unless we worked at Dneg,Weta or ILM etc . Would be nice to get hands on the bad boys but they did pay the 50k for the source code.

Hands down Nuke has been kicking ass and will continue so now that I am at Offhollywood you can bet The Foundry tool set will be used to its breaking point .

MacRumors said:
…it is possible that Apple finally views Motion 4 and other components of the updated Final Cut Studio released last week as a sufficient replacement for Shake's features

It's a sad day for Pro Apps if Apple really believes that.

Yes this was expected for quite some time, but there was always that rumor about its replacement called Phenomenon.

I really don't believe Phenomenon ever existed. Perhaps it was discussed as an eventual progression of Shake, before that group of developers quit Apple and Apple decided a high-end compositing app was not something they wanted to deal with.

I agree though. Apple's track record with their pro apps shows that they're not very interested in perpetuating them. Or at least not in an industry-leading way. To me it seems they just spoon feed their user base just enough to keep people interested in buying. Just enough to keep selling workstations to pro users. Apple knows they have a very loyal fan-base that is completely enthralled with anything they produce. I know far too many people who won't even give Adobe Premiere a try because Final Cut "does everything they need" or Final Cut "is the best". Oooo...Kaaay...

As for Shake, it was awesome in its day, but I replaced it with Nuke nearly 2 years ago and haven't looked back. Still it's a great app to have in the toolkit, especially if you don't have another compositing app (Motion doesn't count), plenty of copies still on store shelves or on ebay and practically free.

I'm also thinking that this round of updates seems v.5. I do have a theory on the pro apps debate. I'm thinking that this last development cycle may have been lackluster, and a Phenomonon team release may have been delayed due to Job's illness. I hate to give one guy so much credit, but he has been the driving force out there in Cupertino.

SIGGRAPH would be a logical target for the release of a Shake replacement... I'm keeping my eyes and ears open this week. Sometimes I'm an optimist.

well apparently Jobs was the reason why the tablet took so long because it wasn't up to his standards, so maybe similar with this new project, thats if either one is true...
We shall see...
