One of the happiest times of my life... About a two months earlier this time two years ago... The day that Steve Gibby and I tucked delivery of the RED EPIC-M #00008 aka M8!!

To many a tool is just a tool, while to others a tool is a direct extension of themselves to allow them to connect with their expression, their work, their art, for me is just that, an extension of myself, my eye, my imagination, my reach, and thru this toll I create, and this tool has become the RED EPIC, the perfect tool to express myself via Still and Motion images.

Since I am leaving a kind of sad moment right now, missing NAB and all, I wanted instead to celebrate what was a moment of happiness, excitement, and a moment that marked the most positive change in my life, and in the direction that was always meant to go, and even so the Red Epic is just a camera, and RED just a camera company, and Jim and Jarred just two people in the Industry, and Steve just an other friend and colleague in this industry...

It turned out that it was not so, in fact all turned out to be much different then all appeared to be, and this in all changed my life for the very best...

Having encountered the rare opportunity to make friends such as Jim, Jarred and Steve, having encountered this great community, having traveled the world with the RED EPIC in hand, and all that has been following since then, has taken me in places that only in my Dreams I tough I would go, and I am going still and inspiration truly at times does come form the strangest places, people or tools, so it did for me.

I wish that at list for some of you here, I did something to give you a warm welcome in the Red family, either via a Camera I might have brokered for you, or via the right words to convince you to jump on board and get an EPIC camera, and that such decision proved extremely positive for you as it did for me, and that like me, you are now eagerly awaiting the DRAGON upgrade to further give you a better tool for your Still and Motion work!!

Think for a moment what you have in your hands, don't be sad because you are not making money from rentals, take the camera for yourself and go out there and film something pool some stills, enrich your Galleries, and take them as a tool of showing what you can do, soon or later some one will see what they like and they will give you an opportunity... Opportunities are out there and are given every day, not just to me, but to you too... Wish you all the very best!!

PS: LiFE is made of moments... Make sure you pin point yours, and cherish them for LiFE!!

Thank you!!

Great words man Ketch,
redusers are now anxiously waiting .......
Dragon is coming, just a matter of hours ....

RED The Passion ;)

Thanks for the very kind words Ketch! You've been a great friend since way back in 2006. Me and Pam have always looked forward to hanging out with you, talking about Red cameras, great meals, and the tiramisu!

That was a great day - February 3 - when we took delivery of Epic M SN0008 (M8)! It was incredible having you, Michael, and Joseph join me and my wife Pam at our Utah mountain ranch to open up the boxes, assemble the camera, then spend several days venturing out into the mountains and red rock country of southwest Utah to get the first images with the camera - pure magic. That week, along with the fantastic experience in August 2007 receiving my Red One SN 0008, and then October 2007 receiving my Red One "London" and 'Hollywood" cameras were the extreme high points of my association with Red.

Long before the above, in 2005, Jim had told me about his dreams for a camera and company called Red. I was also honored to be one of the invitees to the December 14, 2005 "Red Summit" think tank at Oakley Headquarters. I've known Jim since the early '80's. He's a superb person - and obviously a tremendously visionary businessman. Jim's core strength is that he's a great team builder. The Red Team he built is exceptional - Jarred, Ted, Graeme, Stuart, Rob, Matt, Brent, Kelly, Sean, Deenan, and so many more. Jim envisioned Red, backed it, built the team - then the Red Team he hired has been the heart and soul catalyst to launch Red into where they are now.

It was great having you as a member of the crew for the December 2007 L.A. Red Test event I co-produced. Looking back, the crew for that event included a super-talented group of early Red camera adopters and supporters - David Mullen, Jeff Kilgroe, Blair Paulsen, you (Ketch Rossi), Brook Willard, Billy Summers, Tonaci Tranh, Matt Uhry, Lucas Wilson, Darren Findling ("Finner"), Casey Green, Charles Papert, Gavin Greenwalt, Albert Cheng, Mark Mannschreck, and Brian Goff (hope I didn't miss anyone in the list!). We tested lenses, shot many action sequences out on the lot, then Lucas edited pieces up while we all watched. Ted joined us to check out the results.

Me and Pam also loved working with you on your Treasure Island production in Las Vegas - fun shooting, lots of laughs, good food, etc.

Thanks for looking back at some Red history on this thread Ketch! It always good for each of us to remember how got to where we are now. Business is always built upon friendships - people do business with those who they feel comfortable with. There are no limits - each of us can achieve all of the dreams we have in this industry - thanks in large part to Jim's dream, Red Team's hard work, and great friendships/business alliances.

Pam sends you a hug!!

Right on Ketch. It's been a real pleasure watching the journey of yours and Steve's M8 from the get go.

Focus on the good and where it's leading. Cheers buddy.

Inspiring... and very wise words.
Don't stop being who you are. Stay strong as you've always been.
You'll be rewarded by life. WIsh you all the best too and thanks again for the noc !!!!

I don't know Steve Gibby, but i'm pretty sure that you have the same DNA.
All the best to you Steve (from a RED rookie).

Thanks Phil - since then Epic M8 has enjoyed an incredible journey to various parts of the world! Over my career I've used cameras form every manufacturer - and I still do when a particular camera is the best match for a program or portion thereof. But all things being equal, to me taking an Epic out and getting some stellar images is the ultimate rush. Naturally looking forward to putting the Dragon sensor to work too ;)

Johnny - I can answer that - Ketch won the tug of war ;) The camera has spent most of its time with Ketch in Dubai, Europe, and beyond. I'm totally OK with that - its being used wisely and its been well taken care of. Ketch is amazingly careful with camera equipment. I have my two Epic X cameras based here in the USA that I use. BTW - that was way cool on September 13, 2007 having you and Ken shoot that first Red underwater footage at Catalina Island using my Red One 0008 in the housing Mike Hastings made. We did another Red camera "first' that day...one of many that Red One 0008 was involved with.

Victor - everyone who gets exposed to Red cameras catches the Red virus, which changes your DNA profile to that of a "Redaholic" ;) A peripheral change is also to a DNA profile of a "lensaholic" and "accessory addict"! Best to you too - we were all "Red Rookies" at one point. Some of us just caught the virus earlier.

Looking forward to seeing all my Red friends at NAB, and meeting those of you I haven't met yet!

Hell yeah I remeber! Followed all the stuff that was posted from the M8 and wishing I some how would be there experience it. Im pretty sure I was not alone=)

We posted all that so everyone else who couldn't be there to experience it would somehow feel like they'd been there ;)

Those were good times for sure...and more are surely on the way!

I must have watched the videos from that day a hundred times and I couldn't wait for my own Epic to arrive. Best of luck in the future Ketch and Gibby, let the era of the Dragon begin.

To that Im very thankful. Liked the bts were you put the epic on the car roof with just a bag and a strap to hold it. Worked like a charm.

To me the joy of using a RED camera, is not only that of creating something special, but also knowing that there is here a home a community which whom I can share this adventures and images, in the hope that what ever little I can do to inspire others is done, and that some one else does the same and a chain reaction is created to inspire other Filmmakers alike, pushing harder and harder till their dreams are realized, that is what is important to me, not just reaching my own success and realization of my dreams, but the realization of the dreams of others as well.

And thank you for all you kind words and remember... We can all shot something to be proud of, and we can all get to those dreams is we push for it hard enough and persevere, and if we do have an amazing camera like the RED EPIC... well, we have no excuses not to capture amazing images and showcase our capacity as Filmmakers... So... HAPPY SHOOTING every one!!

Steve, please give a hug back to lovely Pam and look forward to see you guys soon, either back at your ranch in the USA or in Italy at my place... DRAGON is coming for us, and a new set of adventures awaits us all... ;)

Beyond shooting, the editing in Premiere Pro has been spell binding. Once you edit RED footage you don't want to go back to anything less. Certainly a joy shared by many of us. This is a very independent camera system.

Thanks for sharing buddy.

the joy of using a RED camera

notice the death grip.....looks like a match of who can take it from whom?

Ha ha, just noticed this...

Truth there is that, while we were both extremely excited about it, and we could not wait to put our hands on it, and both went for it, and instead of the classical you got it, I got it, you got it I got it, and then no one got it and the camera dropped, we both GOT IT and got it very tightly so...

That RED EPIC was the most precious thing there was... ;)

But yea, as Steve said, even so usually an alliance in gear purchases would see that gear shared equally, I instead have almost completely taken over that very precious baby, but it is only so, thanks to Steve's immense generosity, and the fact that at that time He was heavily occupied with projects that did not included the need for a camera, and by the time He did needed one, well, He already had multiple Epic-X cameras, so M8 stayed with me in Italy, and for that I thank again my now very good friend Steve... ;)

Really miss having you here Ketch, I will carry your spirit with me throughout the show, at least to the best of my ability ;-)

Wanted to add the legendary Charles Papert, SOC who did steadicam testing with us at LART to that roster of really amped up camera nerds having way to much fun. Deepest thanks to Gibby for inviting me. Among other things I got to see Lucas riff up a DJ groove while he was running all our rushes through Scratch. LART was also the first time I met David Mullen who, as it turns out, is a five tool player - he really is that nice - humble and gracious, he is an encyclopedia of cinematography, generous with that knowledge, manages to be both a technical master and fluid in his choices as a DP - in the 15 episodes I've seen of Smash he has managed to keep the coverage of the dance sequences fresh, and that can't be easy.

Big shout out to my cohort at LART, Brook Willard, who really is a rock star - I even managed to drag him to Russia with me in 2008 to shoot when I DP-ed the Sex Pistols on tour. We had 2 RedOnes, the 300mm RED prime for shooting from out by the mixer in the middle of the house and Brook standing on the bass bin with the original RED 18-50 IIRC - plus my bastard Mk2SuperSpeed set (25,50,85). Most insane part is that we were shooting monster takes (over an hour) to spinning media (RedDrive) with a very serious vibration issue caused by the sound levels (Brook's tripod is ON the bass bin at the first show!) it was nuts but we got some classic bits along the way and 99% of what we shot was usable even with the dropped frame issues.

Cheers - #19
