  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Quickly renaming a mag?

It'd need to be "4K2" or "4K17" to establish aspect ratio as well... not a terrible idea, but it may add unneeded complexity.

The "force reel" menu needs to be redesigned. The checkbox just doesn't make the changes obvious. There need to be two buttons and a reel selector. First select the reel, then click either "force all reels" [which would force the reel to your selected number and continue the sequence afterwards] or "force individual reel" [which would force the reel to your selected number but return to the prior sequence afterwards].

For example.

Camera just shot A004. I put in a card which I want to be A009. I put in the card [camera labels it A005], go to the force reel menu and select A009. I select the "force individual reel" button. The camera relabels the empty card from A005 to A009. I shoot out the card and reload. The next empty card I put in is labeled A005 by the camera.

Or, conversely...

Camera just shot A004. I wrap one project and start on another, wishing to start with A001 again. I put in the card [camera labels it A005], go to the force reel menu and select A001. I select the "force all reels" button. The camera relabels the empty card from A005 to A001. I shoot out the card and reload. The next empty card I put in is labeled A002 by the camera.

These should be two separate buttons and not checkboxes. A button gets a result, a checkbox toggles an option. Since I see this as more of a result operation, a checkbox doesn't make sense to me.

Yeah, what I'd love to see is a way to litterally custom set your file naming convention entirely. Chances are something like that would have to wait for some kind of USB interface and a remote UI (laptop/palm OS) though. Basically I'd love to see options for mag, clip, date, project name, resolution/aspect, time, varispeed FPS, Audio enabled, etc...all available to add to the filename if you choose (obvious all at once would be horrifying). It'd be great to shuffle the sequence of the tags as well, allowing you to either start naming everything by project name, then mag, or vice versa for sorting purposes.

Maybe even give Red Alert the ability to add/remove the tags based on the metadata of the clip. A DIT/Data Wrangler could view the clip on set, decide what needs to be in the filename/proxy names to ensure the quickest post workflow, and set the tags appropriately.

Data Management is one of the most important aspects of any Red shoot, it'd be fantastic to be able to dial it in as tight as possible for any given workflow.

Yes!! This was a nightmere this weekend! We had to force reel EVERY freaking time, and invariably, in the heat of the moment, the AC forgot twice (understandably, I would have forgotten every other time). But he shouldn't have had to remember, once you force reel, that absolutely needs to reset the incrementing counter.
