  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Questions..?

absolutely... we have one of the prototypes at the studio doing just that right now.

Thanks for that info. Did Sonnet give a shipping ETA? Any mention of the reliability of the Rocket in it? I imagine it will require Thunderbolt aware drivers for the Rocket, which would need to be developed by/with Red so are likely only in testing phase now?

we have beta drivers that are available to customers that have taken delivery already.

The TB Magma box is running a large modular fan in front and a dedicated power supply fan, the case also has selectable fan settings to reduce noise or increase cooling. We ran an LSI SAS raid controller and red rocket all-day every-day of NAB, outputting 5k 120 fps 1080p monitor-out from RedcineX Pro (both Mac OS-X and bootcamp Win7). You can also run a PCI-e mounted fan in the 3rd card slot if heat is a concern. The new TB MacBook pro 17" also transcodes at full speed, using less than half system resources, and can also use both the TB and expresscard slot at the same time.

[COLOR=#FFFFFF !important]Jarred and Jim! I am trying to find a company that interacts so much with their customers, and also make their thoughts and needs a reality. So far the only company doing that is RED!!! You guys are really doing what no company has dared to step into "make customers really really but FUCKING REALLY HAPPY" you both as human beings are also doing magic with the snow ball of great news coming and making us our dreams come true. I barely have used my scarlet because I've been so busy editing, and now there's so many new exited news, and items, and upgrades and the best part "UPGRADABLE TO MY SCARLET" heheheh

when you guys need anything from Miami or Venezuela let me know! I 'll take care of it for you guys! Venezuela has amazing sites for film. and beautiful women as you may already know. LOL

thanks so much...much appreciated

Once again, NAB is one of the highlights of my year, you guys are so inspiring. Jarred, thanks for letting me pepper you with questions and talk your ear off.

A big shout-out to Nate and Nick. My Scarlet pooped out on me Monday night, and Nate helped me troubleshoot things the next day. Couldn't get things sorted, so I brought #843 into the booth Wed morning and both of them took time out of their craziness to take a look at it, Nate even slaved over a download of the latest firmware over the hall's crappy wifi. Above and beyond, gentlemen. That's your hallmark and pedigree. RED forever.

Only the people at RED know for sure, but with the information given so far we can expect, Yes on 4k HDRx with Dragon on Scarlet since they're going to be upgrading the support boards in the camera as well.

And for the second question, same deal, only people at RED know, but based on how its always been and how its likely to always be, RED will not include line skipping in any of their products because it does not lend itself to great images. So no, cropping will be required to change resolutions.

Thanks

Jarred -
I just want to make sure I'm reading this right because you didn't quote which question you were answering - was your post in reply to this:

-Will HDR-X be possible at 4k with Dragon and Scarlet?
-Will be possible to shoot 5k,4k,3k,2k and 1k without cropping with Dragon?

Because if so... that's huge news.
Just wanted to make sure I wasn't misunderstanding.

EDITED TO ADD:
Just realized you may have been answering the question about the Redray projector.
But I'm really hoping you weren't.
:)

i have always been wondering something. it is a bit off topic, but what happened to all the R1s that came back to red during the different stages of the Epic upgrade?
Nobody really knows...
If I was to make an educated guess, I'd say that they are being sold to schools for a very fair price.

Dragon sensor specs

Dragon sensor specs

Hey Jarred. I love everything you guys have announced this year. The amount of info you've provided absolutely eclipses anything else anyone has announced; I hope other companies are seething about this.

I'm wondering, how is it you know for sure the latitude and definitive frame rates without overheating of the Dragon sensor without actually having one there for testing? Are you able to give any insight into that testing/crafting/manufacturing process?

thanks, love your work.

We have sensors.. but way before getting sensors out of the oven you develop the spec into the sensor design. With simulations and having smart engineers you have a pretty good idea what is going to happen before you even go into fab, and once you start getting test sensors back you validate. That is an incredibly simple explanation of the process... but should give you an idea of the process.

My concern with the MLogic option is heat issues. It doesn't look like there's much ventilation, so if you're transcoding footage for a long time such as overnight will it start to have serious performance issues from heat or even get damaged? Not sure the other TB options have much better ventilation though either. has anyone seen these in person and can comment on that?

MLogic is run by the co-founder of G-Tech so I trust that ventilation/heat management will be state of art.

For the last 6 months we took a pause and listened to our customers. We built what our customers felt was missing. The new product you saw at NAB was a reflection of that..

After NAB It is cloudy out there in the market... a sea of stuff. At first.. I thought it was going to be easier for the customers.. more choices. But then i realized its actually getting harder. I expect to see many standards rise and fall very quickly over the next little bit.. companies come and go. Even the most valuable company in the world that was built on the backs of professionals looks completely different right now than it did just a few short years ago.

In the end.. we just want you guys to have the best tools to go out and shoot. Trust that we will keep worrying about whats inside the camera , so you can focus on worrying about what is in front of it.

If you look at the thread in threaded mode, you can clearly see he was replying to the question about the projector.

I'm curious too! Would love to know.
At least one way they're being used is that they're being sold to educational institutions as battle tested units.
