  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Question to you SIDE HANDLE owners...

Mine is also exhibiting the same problem... if I hold the Epic in a vertical position it makes it easier to place in the REDvolt... albeit it's still a bitch to get it to lock.

Guys, I have our alerted our QC and hardware engineering teams to this thread...

My side handle was having this issue. For a while I was holding down the battery then quickly slamming the door shut. If the door is shut, the battery worked fine. Right now I just make sure when I put in a new battery I insert it slowly, make sure the bottom is aligned, then push near the top where the red latch is to make sure it latches.

I started another thread about this, but I will add by name here to the list of "Not working worth a damn." ;-) Ours is terrible and rarely works like it should. Very cheap feeling...

Good news

Thanks Brent, this is very good news. I will hold onto mine until I receive my Quad, and hope that by then the engineering team have found a solution. I really hope that I would not need to send the hole side handle, and RED could just post the little piece by it self, it is really very easy to install

Thanks again

Same here.
Already sent it back to Red.
Came back without much of an improvement.
Sometimes, when mattebox and follow focus are close to the Epic's body (small lenses) it is impossible to do the "hold it in and quickly slam the door"-thing.
Had to switch to Red bricks a couple of times to continue the shoot.

I'm afraid it was never meant to be used in a full config with MB and all, rather just to have a bare, hand held "DSMC".

If we are using a cinematic rig, we need the REDmote or a fully functional touch screen…

Yes, it feels nearly like a Canon. I was just referring to the design of the door for the battery compartment.

Mine did this too until I tried to bend the tab back a bit. It popped out. I was scared that i had just broken it... but it went back in easily and has worked ok since.
Would be nice to get a better designed part (or get a few spares for when it goes bad again).

I had the same issue, but like you guys I couldn't afford to part with the side handle within ten minutes of receiving it. So I very slightly straightened the springy metal strip that pushes the battery out (NOT the red tab), so that it wouldn't force the battery out as much. Now my batteries always stay in easily, but I usually have to reach in and pull the battery out with my fingertips. Not ideal, but it works.

Got same the problem, but oddly enough it only happens with one particular REDVOLT. The others work great inside the handle. It's not really causing too much trouble, I may just live with it.
