  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Ok- I'm very comfortable with the R1 on set and in post- I'll be trading in for an Epic soon. Everything in the manual and on the board seems awesome and makes sense- nothing intimidating especially if you are familiar with the red workflow.

What potential pitfalls am I missing that you as an epic owner have come across while using the camera? For example- being able to see the peaks and noise floor is awesome - add lights and you are perfectly exposed. This feature was not on the R1, but problem solved. Are there any new problems if I am basically using the epic in the same manner as my R1?

Much lighter, wich is good but you probably will have to change your tripod and shoulder accessories...
Resolution is even bigger (obvious) you'll have to work with even better optics if you aim at 4k mastering resolution.

Have a nice day.

The only gotcha we've found moving from R1 to EPIC is the (current) lack of playback on the EPIC. That should be solved very soon.

The other thing that surprised us a little (although we knew it intellectually) is the amount of data the EPIC can generate. Yes, we know the data rates are higher, but until you start shooting with it, you don't realize just how quickly you burn through the gigabytes.

-Can't use Red LCD and Red EVF at the same time (if you want to use EVF, get a 3rd party onboard LCD)
-Outputs 24P (not PsF) video signal (VTR or Moco must be aware)
-No playback (coming soon to Beta)
-Currently ships with touchscreen LCD as only way to control camera settings (Sidehandle & Redmote backordered)
-Needs a spacer plate at the bottom to fit into industry standard configurations
-You need a battery plate adapter cable to use your Red bricks/plate

Hope that gets you started.

If you are used to monitoring redcolor out of a red MX, you should know that epic monitors redcolor2/redgamma2. This means that the monitor output looks destaurated and flat. I typically set the contrast to .4 or .5 and the saturation to 1.3 for on set viewing.

Epic doesn't generate proxies, and they can't be generated from R3Ds on a computer -yet.

Playback is in new alpha build 2.0.2: http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?67156-PLAYBACK

The tripod and head I have is huge and heavy- I'm actually looking forward to a lighter rig. I like the quick plate from Red, so i'll try that. My primary lenses are the original red zooms- I loved what they looked like on the R1- we'll have to see on the Epic.

Justin mentioned the playback issue and I read the firmware is a trade off (right now) for autofocus- seeing as I don't have any autofocus lenses I'm ok with that. Data rate is a big concern. I'm going from Red Drives with a high capacity to the SSDs that are smaller. Sounds like I will be doing a bit of compression testing- i'll look around for the rates and capacities that people are getting.

Ok- that is good to know- I guess there will be an I/O module in the future- didn't know about the LCD functionality. I have a 3rd party HDMI monitor- I'll have to see if that works in conjunction with the EVF- I don't have the Bomb, but the original- I'm not sure if the controls on the Bomb will map to all the Epic functions I need.

Desaturated and flat because the monitor doesn't have the same depth, or because of some other reason?

I'm ok with no proxies. I'm assuming the R3Ds still work in AE and Premiere- my current understanding is it requires a separate download.

Thanks for the info everyone- I really appreciate it.

Don't forget that until the "Pro-Audio" module ships, you will be limited to TWO audio inputs (via the front 1/8" mini plugs), so if you are recording audio into the EPIC body, you will most likely need to procure a couple adapters for your kit. Luckily, there are several nice options out there (woodencamera's A-Box comes to mind...).

(Oh. And I don't believe EPIC's phantom power has beeen enabled in firmware yet...)

Also- not all R1 equivalent frame size options have been enabled, so, for example, while you DO have QUAD HD (3840 x 2160), you DON'T have 4K 16x9 (4096 x 2304).

Another limit is only one HD-SDI output, the SDI output is 10bit 422 or 8bit 444 no 10bit 444 with dual link like the RED ONE.

Thank you RED for making the HD-SDI out 1920 x 1080 instead of the 720 preview on the RED One.

One more feature that should not bother most shooters, but is a limit compared with the RED ONE

The largest SSD is 256GB, that is the limit of how much you can record, With the RED One you could stick a 640GB HDD on it and record for twice as long.

you dont have yet the ability to control the EVF settings, and i dont still know how to turn of or on the bomb evf heater on epic :)
formatting without the lcd is a hassle imho.
i'd love to see a return of 4k16:9
300fps only in scope 2k
redmote loses connection when someone crosses the line between epic and redmote (iny experience with several epics)

these are all minor things which will go away over firmware upgrades.
the epic gives you a freedom you did have last time with camcorders, i mean attach a 17-50 and start to shoot guerrilla.
i dont like anymore attaching ff, rods etc. i start to like more and more the tom lowe style of shooting.
but in a team oriented shooting (1st and 2nd Ac) there are some wishes which i already communicated with red.

but so you know, these things are like...well imagine heidi klum is your girl friend suddenly and you start to think " would be great if she had curly hairs" hehe.

I was pretty sure that I'd be recording separate audio like the early R1 days-I saw the A-Box ad and clicked it- nice option for the price, so I may have to get one.

Bummer about the 4k 16x9- that is typically what I shoot- guess I will be playing with 5k 16x9 and buying big SSDs

I like the 1080 step up- I've always been confident (maybe over confident) with red footage in post and getting out of tough color spots with Red Raw R3Ds.

However- anyone have any lighting issues pop-up with the Epic that they didn't see on R1?

Is it true that in new alpha firmware you can trim and DELETE clips? (Philip Bloom mentioned it here http://philipbloom.net/2011/11/20/scarlet)

That could be helpful in a pinch.

Seems like the big issue for me will be the amount of drives I'm willing to purchase- however I don't often have long shooting days, so I think it will work out.

Thanks Eric- that is a biggie. I'm downloading some test footage now to play with.
