  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

anyone know a tip or trick out there to get more of the altered meta from RCX to travel into resolve (specifically sharpness and detail) ?

thanks guys!

joey.

Stuff under the "post effects" tab in Redcine won't transfer anywhere outside the program

There are sensor level settings not in post effects (like detail and sharpness... I think) which go under other names (like OLPF compensation) in other programs.

I wonder why RED never integrated those things into the SDK (like made them mandatory). Honestly, I really love RCXp's film grain more than most other "out of the box" digital grain. Plus Alchemy group is awesome. Sure they can be re-built similarly in Resolve, but why when that work is already done in RCXP...

Because there are other cameras beside Red out there. Can you imagine, if every camera manufacturer started to "mandate" how to apply grain, or sharpness or curves or any Alchemy effects etc, just for their own camera? Can you say "what a bloody mess"?

That's ridiculous. Half the time you need to install RED's own software for the most up-to-date functionality anyway (like RG4/DC2), may as well allow alchemy group and pre-designed post effects in the process (the work has already been done). Also, it'd be entirely dependent on whatever footagw you're using, not unilaterally fx that work across all footage. Any software that gives you the "modify raw data" tab, loses nothing by allowing the user to apply all of those effects...

What you're saying is akin to saying, "can you imagine 3rd party software having to support all proprietary codecs!? It'd be a bloody mess!" No. It wouldn't.

I have no idea what you're talking about. Once you update Resolve, RG4/RD2 are there. Are you suggesting, that somehow software SHOULD magically update itself to the latest color science?

Effects you describing are better performed outside of the metadata level. Image manipulations much easier to do on the decompressed and debayered image. Come to think of it, I guarantee, that grain is not part of metadata, because it is impossible to apply to the image in the RAW form. Frankly, because all those effects are NOT part of the SDK tells me, that with the exception of detail and sharpness, they are all applied to the gamma encoded images.
The bottom line, it doesn't matter how much you WANT this to happen. It's entirely another matter when it comes to the practical abilities to do it. Once more Mike, there are other cameras beside Red. People actually have businesses, that requires them to work with every other camera. It's bad enough, that Red requires a specialized hardware to debayer R3D. Thank god, they finally allowed the GPU debayer, so some users can get job done without using one. BTW, I'm sure all those, that paid $5k are not very happy, that now they need to spend another $7500 on the new RRX.
