  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Proxy Module...

And now that we have lots of options for slow motion, how are these recorders handling it?

I think they have no way of managing more than 60fps... maybe I'm wrong but If Red makes a module it would tap right into the 120fps stream (or more) and make properly slowed down h264 or Prores files.

An HD wireless module that together with the RedMote Pro provided one with proper wireless control of the camera say in the range of 0 to 50m or 0 to 100m would be highly useful.
 
Some benefits:
(1) Wireless monitoring without needing a Teradeck... director's monitor, or if the latency is low enough, perhaps even useful for pulling focus
(2) Instant h.264 dailies viewable on a variety of devices (including iPads), and streamable remotely, which can be handed off for review without involving the master media
(3) Facilitates lower-end offline workflows and R3D-incompatible workflows thanks to the perfect h.264 proxy, for those with such needs

Cost competetive with Teradeck, integrated into the camera body, and presumably powered directly with no need for separate dtaps... easily worth $2500 from where I sit.

Wifi streaming, is not pointless... think wireless video to the directors iPad, laptop or via internet from second unit to base camp etc. the h.246 capture onto memory card is more of a simple way of getting the shots of the camera lowress and instantly playable on any computer, and it's the codec being streamed. There is one draw back an that is as mentioned here H.246 is not editable with out lagging over cuts in the, for example FCP timeline due to it's high goop frame numbers. Proress on the cards and H.246 for streaming would be the bomb. I would pay 3 times the amount for that....

We need this module so bad for our milo I could cry. So please RED make this and the quad battery thing available and I have no further requests... for at least a few days :)

I will be using a Pix 240 next week!
 
Here is an opnion. It's just my opinion.

I think they should drop the idea for this module.

Reasons.

1. Kipro
2. Pix 240
3. Demand might be low
4. the battery module alone seems to make the camera long enough
5. EPIC ain't ALEXA. EPIC is designed to shoot RAW
6. Develop the REDMOTE PRO first (and other things in high demand like more options for lens mounts)

At first this sounded like a great idea, but it requires all kinds of codec licences, passibly wifi and broadband access. Enough EPICS are getting the job done without the need for this module as third party solutions are doing exactly the trick (KIPRO, TC, start stop over HDSDI, just build a bracket and go.

RED seems stretched to the MAX right now. Sure everything is possible, but how much brain, people and RD power are you going to throw at a module like this AND while it might be a more elegant solution from RED, other things do the job just fine.

Things I would rather see first:

1. A low cost V2 of the ROCKET CARD (how can a Scarlett owner ever own a rocket card?
1/2 the cost of the camera? In one shot this product could kill the "its so hard to post on RED" argument
1a. Continued excellent progress on RCX Pro

2. LENS MOUNTS, DUMB MOUNTS, NIKON, LIECA,etc.
3. EPIC CONTROL from an Ipad and Iphone.
4. REDMOTE PRO
5. A battery powered SSD field backup system (a portable version of the drive reader with a backup drive) Pop the drive in, it backs the media up. Has to work in extreme temperatures.

I don't care if RED makes it or licenses someone like Blackmagic, AJA or SoundDevices to make it. But it absolutely needs to be a module that attaches to the body. I'm really tired of having to put 10 different mounting brackets on my camera to get everything I wanted - including having to power and feed them with SDI. I thought the whole purpose of the Epic was to have a modular system that is simple to use and simple to connect.

That could happen, but I doubt it.
But think about it.

EPIC BODY
MODULE ADAPTER
BATTERY MODULE
PRO I/O MODULE
PROXY MODULE

That's a pretty big camera, maybe larger than the RED ONE, maybe heavier too as every module requires a case which increases weight and space.
Seems to start to take away from the benfits of the compact design of EPIC right now.

Just thinking out loud.

There might be a great thing in the works that will make me happy that I have held on to 15 CF cards.
That, to me would make the most sense.
-slightly thicker than a CF card.
-does everything the Kipro does
-Selectable codecs PRORES or DNXHD or something realtime not h.264 which needs a license and a render.

KiPro is fine but whatever the device is it needs to use affordable media that is non propriatorial. Fast CF cards are fine for this. If theres a kiPro 2 that handles 3BGbit HDSDI and 4.4.4 then great. Prores is fine too we don't use DNXHD but others do so thats fine too.

What we don't want is all manner of even more junk hanging off the camera than we already have causing it to be some sort of squirrel trap. The more elegant the mount system may be will be much better.

This.

And the camera was designed around the philosophy of modules, wherein we can grow or shrink the camera to fit our needs. It makes sense to get as many useful modules out there as possible. That's why I'm much more pro-REDVOLT than using bricks; it keeps the rig light and cable free. Sure, if we used every module possible on one camera it might get out of hand, but there's nothing saying we need to do that. I think you'd also be surprised how compact using even multiple modules can be. Look at this photo:

Now imagine using just the dual battery module instead of the quad, and throw a proxy module on the back instead of that SSD module (which most people will never need). It wouldn't even come close to extending to the back of the shoulder pad, and would definitely be smaller than a RED ONE setup.
