  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

ProRes Recording

That's pretty nice actually. I was under the impression the 2k pro res was going to be a crop. Nice! I like to think about all the things this camera HAS for the price rather than the things it's missing ^_^

Good perspective, and that's generally how I look at all cameras. What CAN they do, but it's also very good to know what they can't :)

Raven is a hell of a deal when you look at it closer.

something i wanted to ask, that im sure phil knows…
if you are doing simultaneous recording of raw and prores, for the purpose of editors being having a smaller file to edit with, can you be capturing prores with a rec709 or redcolor, so they dont have a flat look?
as well can you capture prores WITH a flat look for a lut to be applied later?
thanks!

This is possible for Weapon. Not sure about Raven.

I am very sure you can record like this. Pretty exactly one of the most common reasons to record both.
If you were to record log Prores, I would ditch the RAW for a low compression high quality prores, for quicker turnaround and not to compromise the image both in the prores and the RAW.

Shooting for a RAW online, I'd do a proxy 709 prores, to be able to have as low RAW compression as possible, and still get editorials.

Exactly. Shoot Prores444XQ log ONLY or shoot prores LT rec709 + R3D

No. Maximum output resolution of ProRes is 2K for Raven of whatever resolution/format you are shooting in within the 4.5K sensor. Specifically a maximum of 2K ProRes 422 HQ up to 60fps.

Weapon MG is 2K up to Apple ProRes 4444 XQ up to 60fps.

Weapon CF/Forged is Apple ProRes 422 HQ up to 4K 29.97fps or Apple ProRes 4444 XQ up to 2K up to 120fps. I'm betting there's more to be squeezed out of the CF/Forged models on this front too.

Long and the short of that info is processing power makes up for that difference in a big way.

Thanks for filling in a lot of the blanks about Pro Res situation here Phil! I just kind of gave up on Weapon and lost interest back when I saw the $5K trade in value for my Scarlet Dragon but the 4.5K RAW Raven and Pro Res discussion have gotten me interested again. It will be even more interesting to see where the next generation Scarlet falls in line with these specs...
