I haven't been visiting the forums for a while but just saw the info regarding the new WEAPON release.

I got my DRAGON less than 6 months ago so naturally I don't want to invest in a whole new system.

Does anybody know if there is a scheduled firmware for the existing DRAGON so that we can have the Prores recording as well ?

any info is appreciated

thanks

... and memory speed, therefore minimags only ...

Mert, nothing announced as of yet.

I would say it's unlikely. (Although not totally implausible - if they can, I'm sure they will.)

the compression of r3d files seems to me much more difficult to process than a prores,
so i suppose a Epic should have enough processing power to do also Prores encoding if its processor is general purpose enough :
they already can compress and record 2 raw streams in HDRX on our current Epic's...
so 1 channel with the RAW and 1 with the prores could be a very usefull firmware update? please RED ...

Looks like it's mostly a throughput issue as the ProRes and R3D's are simultaneously recorded to the same media in Weapon.

INCORRECT/EDITED: Although not relevant to internal recording, but I have confirmation that Video Devices new Pix E recorders (between 900 - 1500 bucks i think) will record 4k ProRes 4444XQ from the Dragon via HDMI.

How? There is no 4k hdmi out on epic dragon. Are you talking about weapon?

Yes, thats my mistake. I did, however, get that answer from Video Devices staff - but they and I must have overlooked that...

But that would imply that RDC has an HDMI 2.0 output circuit planned, which is not yet included, mentioned or even hinted at in the Weapon features announcement. Pix E recorders may indeed be capable of this, but it will always obviously require a 4K output to record 4K.

What is the most compact way to record prores on Epic Dragon right now? I guess the newly announced blackmagic 5 inch monitor/recorder or video devices pix-e5?

I believe the Atomos Ninja Star is the most compact.

I've had several samurai iterations since they first came out, but mostly rely on the CD Odyssey 7Q & 7Q+ for prores these days.

For about 3 years now I've been using an Atomos Samurai SDI recorder on top of various cameras from Epic to Sony without ever one hitch or problem in recording. There are lots of newer PRez recorders out now including a new small one from BlackMagic Designs announced this week which has a 5" 1080 screen - amazing. Lots of choices to choose from, just be certain you get one that matches your camera output either HDMI or SDI. A few do handle both inputs though.

At this point if you own a $25,000.00 camera, you should buy a computer with the ability to transcode on set

also almost all the NLE(if not all now) can import and work with R3d files naively...

If you have a super fast turn-around e.g. Dailies at lunch - it simplifies the process...

when all else fails hire a DIT.

What you are saying here describes the DIT job to a T.

As a DP ( & DIT) I would not want to be labored with making dailies on my lunch break and if they are required, then a DIT should be hired to do them. Simple offloading of footage via error checking software like Shotput Pro or Double Data ( I use Silverstack ) with a laptop would be the very most I would recommend on set without a DIT to do more complex things like primary color, audio syncing and transcoding. Otherwise you are overburdening yourself in your job as a DP, and costing another migrant filmworker a valuable job.

BM has mini converters from SDI to HDMI 4K and PCIe cards like 4K Decklink models that allow you to output UHD to UHD monitors. It's important to note that BM makes no pure 4K resolution units - as in NONE. ALL of their products - cameras included are scaled to 1080 or UHD resolutions. That having been said, until Red puts an HDMI 1.4 or 2.0 capable circuit inside the camera all you will ever be able to monitor live from camera without a $7K Redcast Module is 1080. The BM products I mention are after you have offloaded the R3D files, then you can display through one of their devices out of programs like Resolve to a UHD capable monitor.

No live yet, and believe me there is plenty of bitching going on about that and I haven't read one word addressing this subject from any RDC rep all week. If there is a post from them about it (HDMI 1.4/2.0 4K out), someone include a link in this thread please

Yep the BM 5 inch screen looks interesting like wise the Pix E5 . All of these screens offer way over what the Red screens do at many times less the price (except touchscreen connectivity with the camera ). All can do LR Prores proxies ( not sure about file extension handles though) .

Unfortunately that's about it .....and that will not change because of the limited data output options with Red ie no 4k over HDMI.

Very well-said, Bruce. Always good to have a second set of eyes watching all the footage and making sure all is well.
