The first time I tried, it was a test, recording 4k prores + r3d, It didn't work. I did the same test with Prores 2K + R3D and it worked fine. and then I gave up, not really needing 4K prores.

Then later, after my camera came in from a job and it being reset, 4K prores HQ + R3D seemed to work.. But come to find out, it broke prores 4K HQ into very annoying 45second clips. Anyone have similar issues? Is this standard?

I have no problems with prores 2k + r3d. I did not test 4k prores by itself.

The Prores files are segmented into 4GB files like the Red R3D files.

really, have they always been? sorry i never deal with the files myself, though i have a live show i shoot every year and i was wondering if i could switch it over to red, but its very long takes. if so, i wonder how long time wise is 4gb at 23.98fps?

Make sure you're on the latest firmware. There are now pretty clear messages on screen when something doesn't match up with your REDCODE RAW/ProRes settings. There's been pretty big performance improvements on the ProRes front in recent builds as well.

Yes, it's how it's always been for REDCODE RAW and ProRes. How long a take you're get per 4GB depends largely on the flavor of ProRes you are rolling.

well hong long in HQ? or how log in r3d?

It's incredibly not that simple as your REDCODE RAW Compression Ratio, Resolution/Format Size, Frame Rate, and ProRes flavors come into play.

If you are looking at a 4GB chunk of 1080p ProRes 422HQ you are looking at about 3 minutes of footage before it makes the next chunk. Same resolution at say ProRes LT would be around 6 and half minutes before the chunk splits.

@ prores 4k hq you pretty much get it 45sec chunks.. not a big deal for the r3d files, and i guess that's why I never noticed it before, bc AVID & Redcine always joined the spanned clips together.. but if I pull in prores files, they are not automatically joined together and you get a bunch of clips...a 4 min shot (4K HQ) will yield 6 clips.. I know there might be a solution for it with an app and reexporting it whole, but I thought we didnt have to mess with it, and it was ready to go straight to the edit.

It's a matter of 3rd party NLEs changing their sniffer code really. It's all happening right now, just takes a minute to test out, debug, and release.
