  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I'm waiting for my first Red camera, in the mean time I have some workflow questions...

I'm shooting a project with my upcoming Red camera that will use a lot of different elements and compositing.

Will a DPX-based workflow be the way to go?

My suggestion is that you stay r3d as long as possible. Do your primary grading in RED CINE X PRO and make r3d selects with or without tails. Work with the material with that metadata not flattened into the images as long as possible. The multi resolution features and raw format of the r3d is superior to any other native source file format I have seen / touch or heard of so far. For CG packages as Maya, 3DSMax etc you can render out jpg proxies or such but for the compositing part of the work let the compositros have full axes to the r3d selects or finalize your grade completely and then turn it into dpx if it's demanded for the workflow. But I strongly suggest not going to DPX without doing as much as possible to the pictures before leaving the RAW format.

If it's a VFX-heavy project, I would do two things:

1) ask your VFX crew what they would prefer

2) test the workflow beforehand to make sure whatever you do will work for conforming, color correction, and final delivery.
