  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Product release - The RED Null

Well, I'm sold... If you can keep this baby under a grand, preferably at $500, they will sell with every Red One.. But I'm sure you guys know exactly what you're doing..

Will the RED Null be a good thing to have with EPIC as well?

I remember reading that EPIC will have a special mount that will be very easy to adjust correctly. Can't remember the details.

Yes. Epic doesn't change anything really. All Epic does is change the backfocus from the current system to an internal system that you change from a setting in the menu. You'll still need something like the RED Null to help set it with. At least that's my understanding of it.

That's why the price has to be so right for this product. Most of us are worried about it becoming obsolete. Sell if for a good price, and everyone will buy one today.. :violent:

I really don't see how it would become obsolete. A PL mount is a PL mount, regardless of which camera you place it on. This null lens should be usable to set the back-focus on *ANY* camera that is equipped with an adjustable PL mount system. Which makes me wonder if IB/E should change its name. Perhaps the "RED" null isn't the best marketing approach since it should be perfectly usable on SI-2K / IMS PL mounts, Sony F35, Phantom, etc..

Universal Red Null?

Universal Red Null?

Just a thought, and probably too late but with stuff like this: http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=30357, could a model be available for different mounts like Panavision, Nikon, Canon etc? Would be very, very handy. Perhaps a set of shims or a swappable mount - or, even different models. If the price was right...

Off the top of my head, wouldn't a similar system to autofocus (i.e. contrast maximisation edge detection algorithms, albeit somewhat glorified) work with a known target?

I can see the process working like this:
1) Attach widest lens you have/will use
2) Set lens to infinity, point at subject at infinity focus.
3) Engage auto-collimation mode.

At this point, the camera searches for perfect back focus by shifting the sensor block back and forward until optimum edge contrast is obtained, and then locks off the position. Assuming that the user has completed steps 1-3 correctly, that should work, shouldn't it?

Or is there something I'm missing?!

Dom.

Right there in step 1)...
That would only work providing Your lens is perfectly collimated in the first place. Otherwise You will actually "destroy" Your backfocus...

Jeff, Mitch did mention that the lens go relatively close to the sensor - i.e. lot closer than a normal lens would. We know there is the barrier of the OLPF glass and other cameras might have some other elements in there. I would be extremely careful to insert something longer then a normal lens into any other PL mount this baby is not designed for... This is not to say it won't work with other cameras - just don't assume it will...

We will work with RED to make sure there are no interference issues.

Look for an announcement about the RED Null in a few minutes ...

It is a very precise device. If the mounts interchanged then there would be room for error in the exact depth of collimation. But we are considering a full line of products. First out of the gate will be the PL mount RED Null.

More coming in a few minutes ...

Product Release -- The RED Null

I know I said next week, but the demand has spurred us to get this done for today.

We've worked out all the costs and scheduling on the RED Null. This is a precision optical instrument that is engineered to set the camera's mount to an accuracy of just five microns. Each unit is built to a tight tolerance and then hand-fitted and checked to insure absolute accuracy.

The special Introductory Price for the first 100 units is $1595.00. After these first 100 units are claimed the regular price will be $1695.00. In order to get on the list for the first 100 units, a 10% fully-refundable deposit is required. All of those who contacted us in the last week about getting on the list have been sent an email.
