  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Product release - The RED Null

Hey kids, we realize that some people have problems putting down deposits through our website, especially international orders. If you find you can't get through for any reason, please email stevie@abelcine.com (not steve, it's stevie). You can also feel free to CC me as well. We'll use the time stamps on the emails for the queue.

Abel will make all sales direct. IB/E is the manufacturer of the main part, but Abel is packaging and selling the unit, as well as performing final double-checks of accuracy.

...An 8mm lens as mentioned has a focus dial, which means that it has slop in its alignment. The RED Null is locked to infinity as an absolute. It also is optically designed for this specific purpose. The lens is very close to the surface of the sensor, way inside behind the PL lens mount. This gives it the incredibly narrow depth of focus which is all part of what makes it so accurate. Again, the RED Null is accurate to within 5 microns.
...

Does that not rule it out for PL mount cameras with optical VF mirrors, mechanical shutters etc?

Also, any physical clearance issues with things like the Arri "chin" which entailed slight redesign of the RPPs?

As it's a locked infinity focus lens, does that mean physically it will be much more resistant to mechanical shock than shooting lenses?

Shame it wasn't possible to make it $1K. Oh well, will have to wait for some spare cash for this!

Will the RED Null be a good thing to have with EPIC as well?

I remember reading that EPIC will have a special mount that will be very easy to adjust correctly. Can't remember the details.

Do we will know more about this in the next days, that the Red Null will be usable with Epic or not ?

OK... Ordered.

There's really no point in putting it on a film camera, as mechanical depth checkers work just fine for them. The only current PL-mount camera for Digital Cinema with an optical viewfinder is the D21. I'll take a look next week but I still don't really see the point as the mount needs shims to adjust. But that doesn't mean a future variant wouldn't work. If you have a particular use in mind please let me know and I'll try to test for you.

It's a deposit -- says so in multiple places, including this thread and including when you order.

I was hoping for a bit lower price, as I'm sure many here were, but it seems that about ~ $1500 was thrown out around NAB time, so this wasn't a surprise. Still looks like the best option for most small shops or independent operators who don't have other collimating equipment and for checking back-focus in the field, this is going to be a great solution.

As described to me by RED, the RED Null should work just fine. We will send a sample unit to RED so that we can work with one another to ensure that REDusers purchase a device that will work with future cameras.

I put in my deposit but now I'm just considering it... people freak out about checking backfocus in the field but it usually isn't that difficult with a focus chart and a good sized monitor. I'm definitely going to check this item out whenever it's being demo'd... if it saves time and headache, that price seems totally reasonable.

If I have access to a good sized monitor and a chart, I don't consider myself to be "in the field". Charts and monitors are like studio or prep-room conditions, hehe.

That's what I'm counting on. Looks like my ideal solution for now.

I always feel kinda badass about it though, like I'm performing open heart surgery in the middle of a battlefield! I do the Nikon/PL swap pretty often.

This is a very good Field Test of Back focus, I can't wait to test it.

No particular use in mind. Just wondering how universally useful this lens is. Guess it's really specialised for Red - which is fine.

I've found that I can point it at any vaguely contrasty item in the distance, say a tree or a building, use the pixel-to-pixel zoom to see focus and read off the histogram to judge the best moment of accutance. Works fine in the field.

With every RED Null we'll include detailed instructions and helpful hints for its use. It really is easy and accurate.

Yet another unexpected necessary toy for the RED. I'd like to know where everyone is printing all their money so I can participate. I've always thought that we video/film guys were suckers. If you look at the costs to buy top of the line photographic equipment, it's always much less but the daily rate is much better. But I digress...
