  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

PRO IO MINI - WHO WANTS IT - VOTE HERE !

+1. A smart adapter with XLRs and an extra EVF/LCD - perfect. A challenge to shoe-horn all that in there perhaps. But even if it were a bit longer than the "dumb" adapter, that'd still be ok. Better than needing both.

This would be great Red team! Please do create it.

hehehe, I think you are onto something, Mark! BTW, over 1500 hits now :)

Also price should be maximum $1500 :) And someway to add a
power out tap would be really nice, doesn't matter if its ptap or like the one the pro io now.
And can't say it enough times, it should click directly to the back without the module adapter, then i'll be happy :)

+1... But dump the audio out to make it more likely to happen? Headphone jack is fine... I'd rather have the gpio trigger (for on off without a source of power) than audio out.

Perhaps we should each list the top 2 additional ports (no more or people go crazy)?

Also making it a expanded module adapter is a good idea.

This should almost be a standard on a pro camera. What Sony or Panasonic camera doesn't have quality broadcast audio? The merge from Film cameras, broadcast Video cameras, still DSLRs, and a computer is almost complete. The best of all these tools should be what's offered.

I would definitely buy one IF there is NO sync issues, NO audio gaps or loss, NO need to have a duo backup line a $250 Zoom to go with the $13000+ Red camera and all the standard features like phantom power, clean sound and the best quality. Agree also no additional plate to mount. That's like someone deciding that the PRO IO should have it's own battery. Like Apple, it should be user experience first and 'common sense'.

One day wireless Audio built in the camera will become the norm. It may have voice recognition so good that only a person's voice is recorded under the loudest background environments. Till then, having quality audio inputs with full level control should simply be the basics.

If Mark's design is possible, it would be great.

My fear would be that there isn't enough space in that Photoshop to put the circuitry required.

The problem with modular designs - you waste so much space and weight on:
- the hard "professional" metal shell (chunks which are completely unnecessary when plugged in because they don't face the outside world)
- the triangular interconnect thing
...that you don't have much space left over for actual components!

Of course I like lightweight 3D rigs so am biased in the favor of modular.

But really, RED should just make a Dragon Brain that has no mini audio jacks and instead has Toia's "module" integrated into the body.

I know it goes against RED marketing (the whole point is that they've made a "future-proof" brain and you just need to swap out some boards and sensor stuff to keep up to date). But really their brain design itself just isn't right yet.

They should just make basic audio work right on the brain itself OR they should remove the mini-jacks and associated circuitry from the brain and make the brain smaller and lighter so that you can add the audio module and have a camera that's still not big.

But hey, if I'm wrong and they can rectify everything with a super-thin module, all the better!
