  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

PRO IO MINI - VERSION 2 - WHO WANTS ONE !!!!

Part of the frustration people are feeling is that Red no longer has an open road map. Initially it included the Red community but delays and idiotic redusers "burnt" Red. I understand if Red no longer wants to be as open about future plans but PLEASE Red outline your intentions. At the moment you have to troll Reduser to pickup the occassional bone that gets thrown. I NEED to plan and stratagise my future procurements.

I want to invest alot of money at the moment in lenses but I have no idea what Red is doing and even if they plan to do anything. I am willing to hold off major investment and wait for Red if I had a vague idea what they were up to. I also understand Red does not want to flag competitors its intentions so it does not need to supply technical details and delivery dates could be as vague as "next summer."

With so little input into Reduser from Red nowadays you can see the whole tone of Reduser slowly dropping.

Another good reason to have them as separate modules a la version 1 so the XLRs and proxy recorder slot can be on the same side.

This IO module should have been the first module released for the Epic.

I want one.

You are right Tom and Jim dissapeared from the forum.

Also incredible how they launched the Epic-mono (a true revolution in digital cinema acquisition IMHO). Not very Red-Like, creating a big event. They annonce a product when it s really ready to ship.

Hard to predict.

I agree that a bit of bummer. I too have to make investment choices, and without knowledge of what is coming, i'm looking for current solutions and the money is going to other lens manufactures, the pix 240, innocinema for the xlr taps etc etc. I also don't need full specs, but a little more plans of what is coming and about when would be nice to make a better choice. But so far the off topic discussion. I also agree this should have been the first module to launch, really showing the power of modules and creating a camera that can be even more versatile than it is.

I also think that the side sad cannot be removed it the mini mag is inserted, but that could be solved by making the module a little bit thicker, so it has some more distance from the side ssd only like 2cm extra is needed, and sticking the mini mag a little bit deeper in the module :)

Tim,I hope very much your wrong. I hope Dragon will prove to be a real asset in the battle against the Tsunami of new gear arriving. The modular nature of The Epic still means it has the potential to be truly competitive. The issue is the module potential is yet to be realised. The Pro I/O module simply adds to the Epic most of the features I would expect a camera to have. The SSD module is kinda handy but no real advantage over the side SSD module. The heavy battery module for me offers no real advantage over a simple Red brick battery. The Meizler or "Hollywood" module offers a bundled suite of top end features that will suit the big boys but at over $20,000 to realise its potential (excluding lens control) I will probably have to pass. Where are the lightweight cost effective modules that we could add to the camera as needed. A proxy recorder, ability to use the EVF and LCD and a couple extra I/O ports??? This is a camera already 18 months into its product cycle and I do not have the camera set up as I need. It has been said that a standalone box Proxy module is due early next year but this is now 2 years into the Epics life.:frown5:I would pretty pissed and suprised if Red abandoned the Epic at the next NAB and came out with an "all in one solution" and a whole new camera. The main reason I chose Epic over Alexa was not that it is a better camera but that it would serve an owner/operator by being obsolescent resistant and a better ROI. The module concept should be able to propel the Epic forward for years yet but I am yet to see a single useful Module (for my use.)

Pretty much spot on on every topic. For every renter or professional user I may say.

Jim and Jarred are probably fueling the jet to come and punch me in the face for causing such a stir on this subject.... But I'll take the hits for chance of this thing being made.

After having a good long hard think about my personal requirements and reading the hundreds of threads on the last PRO IO MINI thread I started... I think its best not to try jam pack it with every single option, as that is what the MEIZLER MODULE is designed to do.
This little baby is only for the thousands of us that want to keep the cameras small and powerful. With this module comes full size Audio inputs / extra EVF and 4k/2k proxies files simultaneous with R3D's...

Let the big movie guys get the big rigs with all the bells and whistles I say, and the power to them. We applaud RED for making things like the MEIZLER MODULE available to them.... but now its time for the little guys, the 80% of us who want to keep things small and functional. This is why we all bought into RED EPIC (including the amazing image quality of course)
PRO RES for instant editing is what saved ARRI... If it was just a RAW camera it would be as dead as the D21 is a long time ago... we all know this. So to have a small and PRORES (or DNXHD) in a tiny module (as well as proper audio inputs) - that would be the last thing to we (i) will need to say out loud. "PERFECT"
Actually the RED PLAYBACK IS WAHT MADE THE CAMERA PERFECT FOR ME.... this will top it off.

I know I know this could be a ridiculous request for RED... but when I see sound pix and Samurais sort of doing it... and knowing that RED are the kings of shrinking horse power into little boxes... I totally think RED can do this.

Thank you again Jim and Jarred in advance.

I don't think this fits in a box this size - substract all the connectors and such. There is not much room left, really.
For the sake of modularity and profit for RED, lets make two out of it. Whoever wants the proxy recorder and has a PRO I/O can just take the proxy, who hasn't can take it along with your mini I/O.
And suddenly there is double the space, more margin etc.
This product thinking even leaves room for the meizler, it pretty much makes up for a 3 stage product lineup (mini, pro, meizler).
And with the idea of making the proxy module a normal module, but the mini I/O the adapter, it all fits into place and doesn't eat too much space compared to the 'old' design of the "you-need-the-adapter-to-adapt-modules" thinking.
Fine enough for me.
Oh, and seriously, no 4k proxies. Please. Lets not become greedy.

Apart from that, I still like the idea of the +1 module.
Shouldn't your idea work out, let please at least get the +1 thingy, I still don't come over it that I can't drive the LCD AND EVF at the same time without Pro I/O attached.

I think the question posed at the head of this thread should be if it will happen rather that who wants one... god knows that if red did release this thing into the wild they would sell one for just about every scarlet / epic out there. The +1 monitor and Proxy recording has to be the thing most all of us would love to see in a small module. In fact this "toia" module thread has led me to sell my PIX240 just because the demand is so high that this should happen sometime in the near future. My prediction is in between epic and scarlet dragon upgrade time.
I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

Personally, the only thing I'm really missing is a very small mini-XLR input module. I don't need another LCD/EVF, and I can use the existing I/O functions of the brain.

One thing is consistently clear.... Epic owners are loosing out gigs, especially commercials, to Alexa because of the Raw factor. Red knows this. Producers runs away from Epics/Scarlets like a plague and post hates dealing with R3D. But my colorist loves Epic's Raw possibilities. At the moment Pix 240 has saved some of those gigs for me at times, but it is not enough. This Pro I/O Mini module or the "TOIA Module" :-) is really needed. The more projects we land with the epic the more money we make & able to afford future epic gear and stay longterm customers.

I understand Red is pushing 4K Raw as a standard, but one part of the market needs fast turnaround ala Alexa. Now while we wait for the rest to catch up... can RED offer at least 2k/16:9 ProRes via Proxies, if there is no time to develop this module, and rival the competition in the meantime so I can keep my gigs and hook the producers on HDRx, Raw, small form factor & all the mighty power of the epic and whats to come.

The technology for new modules is already here in the Meizler, all they need now is to slice it with new casings. I'm sure it's not the hardest thing to create.

You would think so... but maybe the big boy MM has taught the RED guys on how to make this little one better.... if they ever make it.

I‘ve bought 2 GoPro HD Hero 2 and love them. Very small, powerful and versatile.

I need my EPIC small and light. The MM is for the big guys. I would like to have a very thin WiFi-only Module with remote control and live streaming via iPad App in 1080p/2k.

Something like this

I decided today to stop my Meizler order... Even though its a great box and full of tech. I thought about it and realised that I will not use it to its full potential at all. I only need the Proxy recorder, the rest is not needed in my world. Plus I don't want the size of the EPIC to slow me down and become to heavy for my style of shooting.

I'm staying small... and praying the RED TEAM bring out a mini. but not worried if they don't now.
I'm more than happy with my cameras.

Till then, no more RED expenditure. (except for dragon sensor)...
