  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Prices of SSD Cards

Does it matter, it's like the ink containers for the printer in our office cost almost as much as the printer itself. And when I look at the inc cartridge it looks nothing more than colored ink and low cost plastic... And as long as there is no piracy or 3rd party vendors around I must say that paying for the ink is part of printing.

Also if my job were depending on making nice paper prints I think I would do some quite extensive research before I started to use un approved cartridges and such.

But I bet there must be some guys here on this forum that has tested to take a red SSD apart and replaced the internal memory for a bigger one, or no?
Now that would void warranty and probably not work, but still if you are so tempted to get more for less that the first route i would test.

i tested with other brand of ssds and it doesnt work.needs special firmware for ssd
 
I would be a very happy guy with news of a working 48gb RedMags that will work with the R1
 
What brand SSD's RED uses?

Basicly any SSD's would work fine with RED cameras. Like others have said, there's about 2k$ air in the price of 256GB RED SSD, but people have to understand that RED is business not charity.

Also it's really stupid to compare RED SSD prices to film prices. Only thing you should compare RED SSD prices is other SSD prices.

By the way is RED the only manufacturer on the digital stills or video market that has restricted recording media like this?

Nope...
All the "we guarantee functionality" deliverers make their own brandspecific solutions. And while REDs are not cheap, they are far from the priciest.
That doesn't mean I wouldn't love to be given the option to use "off the shelf raided media" for my own projects.
I wouldn't be seen dead with such a solution for any budget production I advice, though...
 
Can you buy a third party SxS or P2 card? No you say...?

Proprietary media is exactly what it sounds like, proprietary. But with a simple laptop and raid, you can cycle cards fast enough where you only need a couple. The faster the download computer and ports, the more you save since you need fewer proprietary mags for the camera. This is not a red only situation, alexa, F5/55, phantoms, all cameras are like this.

When I hear about Red mag pricing being a lot I can't but help and wonder, "do they have idea how much phantom mags are? or how much the third party raw alexa recorders were?" everything is relative guys. high end cameras cost high end prices, you can't compare them to an SD card in a handy cam. Go look up what what some of the mags cost for other camera systems and then tell me what prices seem fair...

because the way i see it, 3 or 4 mags and a fast download station is all you need to infinite loop the cards...

In response to the OP.

If you can't afford the SSD media you bought the wrong camera system.


Red was absolutely correct in testing and developing their own media with appropriate pricing for their customers. They work all the time in all sorts of conditions and are in a pretty bulletproof casing.

I believe the the firmware is on the card that the drive sits on and auto configures for all three drive sizes... And give a boost for the speed rates. But Just a theory. Thats why 64,128,256 red mags ssds are black.. the 48 gig is grey and the 512gb is red. Maybe they used a different manufacture for the 48 and the 512

little late to the party :)
 
I still use my Red drives, use CF cards for handheld work, and do not use SSD cards unless the client pays for it separately. And yes Red SSDs are overpriced whichever way you dice it.
 
Yeah.. I am .. Just got my RED ONE MMX Battle Tested a few weeks ago and getting stuff for it,,, LOL.. Better Late than never.
