  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Price increase of the RAVEN by 1000$/€

As someone who shoots natural history. There are actually no decent cameras available that shoot 4k @ or over 100fps under $20k. The Raven does it for ~$10k = B.A.R.G.A.I.N

I'm not sure if you are following the two cameras development , but When URSA mini 4,6K was anounced just a few weeks later red release and set the price for raven.

One day. We had an announcement that Raven was suppose to start shipping (everybody realized this was not true ... i know people that ordered the camera with in 30min of anoucement Haven't received their cameras yet) A few minutes later BMD said URSA mini was ready to ship.

red and bmd are fighting for this market share if you don't see it i think you neee to watch a bit closely

also I'm,not aware of any camera manufacturer that increase price after release....

Ursa mini was announced NAB 2015.. Raven September? How's that a few weeks after? And if you mean announced shipping, then again, Red in February announced the price change and Grant from Blackmagic announced the ursa mini was finally shipping in March.

I'm not aware of many camera manufacturers that are as transparent in their process as Red. Not aware of many camera manufactures that delay a camera for over 8months with no update and take away one of the main features that got people excited (switchable rolling and global shutter) -Blackmagic. Or camera companies that give a 5 thousand dollar discount on one of their premier cameras MG Weapon because they figured out a way to make it cheaper. What's your point?

Comparing redcode charts between the two cameras, you'll find they're the pretty damn similar for everything under 4.5K.

Raven is functionally a Scarlet-W that's windowed to 4.5K 2.1:1 with a fixed (but included) EF mount and fixed standard OLPF.

Considering you'll have to buy a lens mount for Scarlet-W (bare minimum of $700), you're saving $3700.

I think it makes perfect sense for some of the lower budget players that:

1. Aren't going to be using PL glass anyway.
2. Want to step up to the "4K world", but don't absolutely need 5K.
3. Don't care enough to be swapping OLPFs around.
4. Don't need 3D LUTs in camera.
5. Don't need anamorphic 6:5 modes or 4:1 or 8:1 super wide modes.
6. Don't need DNxHD HQ (a feature that was added just last week)

I don't see how that's overpriced at all. And if you got it at the initial order price at $6k, that's $4700 less than the Scarlet-W + lens mount.

... I've got a friend with a DJI Phantom, 4K recording in camera and 720p preview is great so I can't think of a good (non-business) reason why you couldn't get live view in Fool Control for basic framing....

Perhaps because foolcontrol is a camera control app made by one (very awesome) individual whereas a DJI product has Lightbridge 1/2 hardware built in which enables wireless transmission of a video signal via WiFi, engineered by a team of hardware/software integration folks.

Apples to oranges here...

I guess it depends on one's definition of decent, but right now the big URSA (not the Mini) with the 4K V2 sensor does 4000x2160 at 120fps in raw with only 3:1 compression (or you can use ProRes).

When the 4.6K big URSA comes out (or the turret upgrade for the 4K version), it will be able to run the full sensor (4608x2592) at 120fps in raw as well (although it might have to bump up to 4:1 compression to handle the data rates.)

Raven at 120fps is at 15:1 (full sensor) or 13:1 (4096x2160) compression.

Raven is maxing out at 140 MB/s data rate.

URSA with it's dual CFast card slots is currently maxing out around 530 MB/s - that's almost four times the data.

You should have preordered Raven before the price increase instead of complaining.

The price increase of Raven has been well known for a few months and advertised by Jarred, as well as on RED.com.

i would have liked to rent the raven before dropping over 10K. I know a lot of people on this forum are rich, but unfortunately i'm not one of them. a thousand bucks extra makes the raven less tempting.

Thats understandable. If you would have pre ordered in April you would have been be so far back in the queue that you would definitely have been able to rent a Raven before you would have been allocated and asked to pay. The deposit is refundable, so if you at least had 500$ to deposit it would have been a good strategy.

Raven is essentially a gateway drug for those leaping over from different brands. People have a hard time realizing that in a RED ecosystem accessories are what make the bulk of the package cost.

If I were anyone who's thinking about Raven, I'd think again and got a Scarlet-W, it's only $3000 more and you get a full featured camera without any feature cutbacks. This is coming from an original Scarlet-MX owner, so I know how it feels when your camera is limited and you just want it to have all the features. I was so happy when I got my Epic-MX.

You guys get such a bargain with Scarlet-W right now, I could only dream of when I was putting my deposit for S-MX.

Edward the KineMAX 6K (under 10KUSD) can shoot 4K RAW 100FPS with a semi-global shutter (note - this is not in the normal rolling shutter mode which is not good with fast motion, but is a special "sports" mode that approximates global shutter very closely), as can their new Terra 6K (usable body at 920g and can shoot internal 6K ProRes with whatever LUTs you want), and their upcoming Terra 5K which has true global shutter and also has the aforementioned specs. So I think the claim that "no decent cameras available that shoot 4k @ or over 100fps under $20k" isn't accurate. Of course here in reduser the knee-jerk reaction is to bash the kinefinity cameras even though 99.9999% here never worked with one.

Those who feel the Raven is overpriced are right in my opinion. The Scarlet-W is awesome at its price point, though. For those who can't afford Scarlet-W, I would take a serious look at the Terra 5K, which will be shipping in about 2 months

I think it will be the same with 8k. Only early adopters get that 10k USD upgrade price. If you decided to wait to buy 8k weapon of the shelf I think you will need to wait quite long and I think the price will be much higher.
