Do people expect the price on used reds - especially the MX line - to drop significantly after the trade in program ends on Sept 28?

I'm seeing Scarlet MX kits starting to sell below $6k, and Epic MX kits hovering around the $10k mark - the same as the trade in value - and presume this price on the used market is inflated because of the trade in value.

I wouldn't doubt it, if they don't go up now.. Since the trade in forced the price drop. I could be wrong about this.. A rule of thumb on any camera purchase. Is to take the full price of the camera and divid it by 2 every 2 years... After a while, it just kind of stabilizes...

I would welcome the price drop.
Would love to add an EPIC MX to my Scarlet MX kit :)

How would the trade in program force a price drop? Surely economics would dictate the opposite would occur; companies use trade in programs both for costumer loyalty and mainly to reduce the number of used units for sale on the used market, which can undercut the demand (and price) for their new products.

Without the trade in program, a higher number of used Red cameras will be available on the market. Assuming the number of buyers remain fairly constant, sellers will now have more competition between other sellers and be forced to lower their prices.

But if a sensor swapping program begins in the place of the trade in program, there could easily be a price increase on the used market - if sensor swapping on an old model is cheaper than buying new.

Nathan, why are you referring to the sensor swap program?

That is valid only for DSMC2 cams.

Is the Sept 28 deadline valid for DSMC1 only or for DSMC2 (Dragon) too???

I'd bet the end of support for the DSMC1 line is more responsible for the lower prices than the trade-in program. That's why I sold my Scarlet MX and ended up with a C200.

Prices don't so much stabilize, as the sliding down of prices slows down. (as heck, once a camera is only worth say a couple of thousand, then nothing much more than chipping away at a couple of hundred dollars here, or a hundred there, can really happen then)
