  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Prepare yourself...

Hey Jim- Did you ever see my thank you note a couple weeks back??

Hey Jim- Did you ever see my thank you note a couple weeks back??

If you didn't, I just wanted to say thanks again...
Despite what you and the team may bring us on the 3rd, I'm still gonna be loving the R1.

Lovin' it.

-CK

I just want the best proffesional RED digital cinema camera possible . And yes, I will pay MOOOOOORE.
After all its just a little box going in between the other stuff in a $250K+ package....Seriously, just my filterpackage including 4x5,65 and 6x6 was close to $20K.
I hear the Sony EX3 is good.....

We are very excited about the updated release and I can't see anyone being disappointed. But keep your expectations in check for a couple more days... if possible. :-)

Jim

Dwarfs previous announcement but keep our expectations in check. Ummm.... I don't think those two statements are possible to reconcile. :D

My hopes are a 24p s35 SLR competitively priced with Nikon and Canon's top of the line offerings.

please.

60fps becomes a standard in all digital cameras; apples and oranges - Yes, but a lot of them do 60fps. Anything more becomes the luxury model; and for that you have to pay.
I am sort of glad that the higher frame rate will get expensive, it's what will keep the R1 in it's place.
I guess Red is "maturing" and so will the Reduser, A flavor of Red-Cams will find their place on the hobbyists table as well as a sophisticated rental place; and good for us, we may finally be able to rent some lenses without that dark look from the rental guy.

I would like my RED Scarlet to come with an attractive, scantily clad woman named "Scarlet" who will happily and most accommodatingly provide me with all the answers to my many questions and also lay out a workflow plan that is both efficient and affordable. And then pay for Chinese take-out.

RED TEAM,
I think this announcement deserves a countdown on the homepage like the previous one, because that one was insignificant right?

Seconded. I just want an SLR that also shoots beautiful HD for <$5K.

there is nothing fake about shooting S35 on our FF35 sensor.. As mentioned, you just have more options.

I'm probably confused. I never shot windowed 2K with Red, so I have no idea what the results were. I was always 4K with a PL lens. But I seem to recall that those shooting windowed had various issues; they had to do mental-math (a 24mm had the look of a 12mm lens - or vice versa), and that shooting windowed made focus more critical/difficult. If I've remembered this all wrong, please let me know and I can relax. If I can stick on my PL lenses, shoot S35 with an FF35, and it's exactly the same as having a S35 Monstro camera, then I'm already perfectly happy.

Or

Red-One $17,500 Equivalent= Scarlet S35 $7,000 With $10,500 Red Basic Package(Lens Mount, Body Cap $12, DSMC I/O Module, Wireless Redmote, Accessories: (1) SD CARD, (1) mini-BNC to DIN 1.0/2.3 cable $35, (1) mini-XLR to mini-XLR cable $35, (1) mini-XLR to XLR adaptor $19, Bolt Set $9) $110 for all known numbers

Red-Two $17,500= Scarlet/Epic S35 $7,000 - $28,000 Average $17,500 Without $10,500 Red Basic Package(Lens Mount, Body Cap $12, DSMC I/O Module, Wireless Redmote, Accessories: (1) SD CARD, (1) mini-BNC to DIN 1.0/2.3 cable $35, (1) mini-XLR to mini-XLR cable $35, (1) mini-XLR to XLR adaptor $19, Bolt Set $9) $110 for all known numbers

I have to stop thinking of Red for a few days. :poster_oops:

You will be able to mount PL lenses and shoot S35 crop out of the FF35 - in which case the camera will behave just like Red One. Normal FOV and everything associated with it. Then swap mount for FF35 (let's say Canon), add Canon "L" glass and You get the same FOV as the FF Canon still cameras, but for motion... :)

There will be quite a few pleasant surprises on Dec. 3rd. But one thing should be kept in mind. You have to pay extra for frame rates. It is fairly easy and inexpensive to build a 5fps camera these days. It becomes quite a different story to get 30fps. 100fps is exponentially more difficult.

It isn't just the sensor, although that is a big cost. Passing large quantities of data requires a significantly more complex electronics package and heat management program. Add lower quantities of production to the mix and buying frame rate capability costs more. A lot more.

Expectations : As I saw in many posts, nobody is disappointed anywhere about resolution (anyone?), but some were just a bit disappointed about the projected S35 speed vs the 2/3" DOF (considering that you would need both together, but that would mean additional lenses, etc). I am sorry to reiterate this, but it should be said : the desire for a S35 size sensor with only 2K (or maybe 3K) resolution, yet 120fps at a price tag anywhere reasonably in the middle between the currently projected 2500 (2/3") and 7000 (S35 5K) would be very widespread :

DOF control + a reasonable bit of slow-mo + (>=) 1080p30

and this obviously as affordable as possible.

It is the segment in competition with products like HVX200 + decent 35mm adapter (which costs alone half the price of a 2/3" Scarlet brain) etc and you are damn near that price range.

There was a lot of confusion about the "DSLR killer claim". The point is, if you can do those great things you announced, you might as well be able to propose a real "HVX killer".

It is not the same market as Red ONE and it is a totally different market from EPIC. These markets need higher resolution and higher data rates! IMHO, you should make people pay for resolution rather than giving them resolution cheaply and making them pay for speed (and electronicswise, this boils down to the same, right? Data volume!) if you want to deal well with the two totally different markets. It is not just different market segments, it is different markets.

Hell, you could as well abandon or postpone the 2/3" brain and the fixed lens Scarlet (promise from another time) and propose at an intermediate price tag a low end (2K) S35 brain for I don't know, 3500(?), 4000 (?). In the end, it would save you development effort and I think you would not lose a single customer.

I think we are all prepared for change. Its Black Silicon is in it? :sarcasm:

Thanks for the clarification. I thought I knew this stuff inside out, but... well, it's been a long, exhausting year.

That being the case, I can't wait for this new announcement. Anything that improves on what we had in the last annoucement, even slightly, will be very, very exciting indeed. And if additional frame rates cost more, I think that's great. I'll hardly ever need very high frame rates; when I do, I'll hire. A great solution.

It makes perfect sense, Jim.

150-200fps is what doctor ordered here. Hopefully I'll be able to afford the medication... :w00t:
