  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Prepare yourself...

I think the most likely scenario will be cheaper low end scarlets ( 2/3" ) and epics ( S35 & FF35 ) that only offer 30FPS. I wish they would offer a cheaper Scarlet S35 or FF35, but its framerate is already 30, so they couldn't cut it too much ( 24 or 23.976 min ).

Something similar is my guess as well. I'm thinking they realize that you can make a Lincoln or Caddilac or Chryslyer 300 and put a smaller engine in it and make it more affordable. This gets you the ride but not the speed. For those who want the speed, that costs extra.

If only I could plug the sensor module to my brain... could save me some cash.

Or pay somebody else to do the "processing" for me.

Hmm... I wonder how much fps could I get?

Ohh, this don't make any sense. Sya!

Ok... hurry up and wait.

It sounds like Scarlet will remain affordable and Epic will cost a bit more... that becomes a good business plan then IMO, make the money on the big guys and get everyone shooting Red.

Standing by.

I can guess, and only guess, that part of the announcement is about faster
frame rates for more money. But I don't think the already announced cameras
will take a back seat to these, just different options. I think people have got to stop looking at Red as a vertical company and see it more horizontally positioned in some of its product categories. the S35 is just as capable as the FF35 or the 617 for the jobs those cameras are best suited for, just as
the new offerings will be the best fit for what they are designed for.

Or Red has just invented the Transmorgafaction camera that is all things to all people....which could happen.

No offence but I'm going to spring for an FF-Offhollywood. The S35-Karapetkov doesn't really cut it for stuff that's going back to film.

wait, hold on, I thought the cheaper Epics (S35 & FF35) that only offered 30fps WERE Scarlet S35 and Scarlet FF35...

Well the EPIC is supposed to have extra features. I don't know the extent of it's extra features, but I am assuming they encompass more than just more fps.

With higher frame rates, the only thing to complain about is price.
With research of other options, one realizes the prices are amazing!

Perspective is the most valuable tool of all.

I wonder how big the RED poduct line is gonna end up? Is buying one gonna end up like a BYOC ( build your own camera ), where u pick a brain to start and customize from there?

I'm thinking something like this could work:

Epic S35 Starting Price: $25K
Upgrades:
50FPS (+ $1,000)
100FPS (+$5,000)

There will be quite a few pleasant surprises on Dec. 3rd. But one thing should be kept in mind. You have to pay extra for frame rates. It is fairly easy and inexpensive to build a 5fps camera these days. It becomes quite a different story to get 30fps. 100fps is exponentially more difficult.

It isn't just the sensor, although that is a big cost. Passing large quantities of data requires a significantly more complex electronics package and heat management program. Add lower quantities of production to the mix and buying frame rate capability costs more. A lot more.

We are very excited about the updated release and I can't see anyone being disappointed. But keep your expectations in check for a couple more days... if possible. :-)

Jim

I think Jim was referring to all the buzz about 5K & 6K Scarlet only supporting 30 FPS. And I am there with him. This is not easy - if it was, Canon would have make the upcoming 1DmkIII and/or 3DmkI with at least 60 FPS...

But Jim, how about S35 sensor with 3K res? You know I have asked this many times (and I don't expect direct answer...). This should "only" involve a more expensive sensor, as all the electronics could be "re-used" from 2/3" sisters... But this sensor should not be more expensive than the 5K one - right? I would gladly pay between 7500~10000 for S35/FF35 Scarlet with 3K resolution and 120 FPS speed...

In any case I can't wait till 3'rd...

The only problem I see with the 2/3" solutions is that they're really not a DSMC. At 3K, you're only getting 5MP stills. 5MP is good, but even the Nikon d40 would do a better job with stills. Now, a cheaper S35 that shoots at 3K but takes stills 13.8MP, and NOW you're talking!

That's what your girlfriend says when she's cheating on you brah. The guy with the biggest camera wins :gun:

Oh that we could just slap on a bigger lens:sad:

You can't have everything. I for one want a digital cinema camera. For stills I will get the 617 Epic - as I specialize in nature & landscapes... :D

In the same way both 2/3" models are pure D-cinema cameras with focus on motion, rather then stills. And the 617 is the other way round... Although 28K @ 25FPS is nothing to sneeze at... :clown2:

Where will it be announced?
Will it be reachable from www.red.com? I hope so.

Did he just ask that? Yes the information will be released on this webpage, as well as RED.com. I don't think that changes, but hey, Jim has surprised all of us! :help:
