Hey everyone! I just tested rendering a Red clip in the latest release of Premiere and it was 2.02x faster than before!

My machine is a 2021 MacBook Pro 16" M1 Max w/ 64GB memory. The clip is a 2-minute 8KHD 23.976 fps clip shot on my Red Monstro, file resided on my external SSD and rendered to laptop internal SSD so read/write speeds weren't a factor. In Premiere I simply had the clip in a matching resolution timeline with a LUT applied inside Lumetri, exported to ProResHQ in UHD at maximum render quality. It took 5m29s before, and 2m44s now. Much better! In Activity Monitor I saw less processor power being used than before, and the graphics card used to look like 80% use now looked like 100%.

Very pleased, indeed.

James - can confirm here.

Seeing roughly 2x speedup on M1 Max.

Further, the Studio Ultra is seeing a big boost over the M1 Max.

Exporting a timeline with 4 stream of 8k .r3d out to h.264

M1 Max 64GB on Premiere 23.2: 9:04
M1 Max 64GB on Premiere 23.3: 5:25

Studio Ultra 128GB/48c on Premiere 23.3: 3:35

5995wx + A6000 on Premiere 23.3: 3:41

I did not have a chance to bench the Studio and the PC on the older version here as they'd already been upgraded.

In my experience the AS to PC gap will widen when exporting to ProRes or h.265

Still, pretty wild that arguably the best Premiere/r3d editing experience is on OSX + Apple Silicon these days. Never would have guessed that if one asked a few years ago.

just had to downgrade to the previous version of Premiere myself - The new update locked me completely out of the Export window. Literally couldn't export a video, it would give me a spinning loading icon that would last indefinitely. Media Encoder wouldn't work to export either. Went back 1 version of Premiere, and it was working fine again.
(PS i'm on a 2021 M1 Max, 64GB ram running Ventura 13.3.1, the most recent version)

I was having the same export problem as you and there are two work arounds I found in the meantime, besides downgrading back a version, resetting the app preferences worked for me, which is kind of a pain if you use a lot of custom shortcuts, or you can actually make it work out of media encoder if you navigate to your project through the media encoder program.

ahh thanks for the tip. My Premiere auto-updated again, and so i'm back with the same export problem. I worked around it like you mentioned, going through the Media Encoder program. It's a pain, but working for now... hoping for another update soon that fixes it for me.

Haven’t been here for awhile but thought I would throw this up here as the Premiere forums like to tell me to use proxies haha. Been working on a heavy duty 8k project with sometimes 12 layers of 8K at varying opacity levels and was admittedly pushing my M1 max with 32 core gpu 64 gig ram machine hard at 1/8th playback quality and after updating to version 23.3 it has degraded playback to such an extent that i can no longer even get 3 layers to play smooth at 1/16th quality. 23.4 didnt fix it either. Reverting back to 23.2 the full project plays again. Anyone else with Mac seeing issues with performance with 23.3? Other areas are also bit glitchy with scrolling causing several second delays and the fan going full blast just moving around the timeline. Probably wouldn’t be as noticeable if I weren’t already on the edge of performance.

if someone wants to have some fun and has one of the M1/M2 macs see how many lanes you can get at varying opacity and once you reach the limit riol back to 23.2 to see if it works on that version.
