  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Premiere Pro CC Bug - 5K HD Support

I am running Premiere CC version 7.0.1 (105). I had the same problem in CS6 and know at least a half-dozen other people are experiencing this also ever since Red released the 5KHD format. I have also run every possible firmware from Epic and all problems are consistent- when the rocket it enabled in 5KHD there is no playback of footage.

Hi Jeffery,

Are you on PC or Mac? I just downloaded the 5k sample clip and it plays fine with and without rocket on my Mac. For me, my 5k problems went away after the RED update that was released a while back.

I am planning to move the Rocket over to my PC, but first wanted to confirm what your platform is.
Also, do you know if your Rocket work ok with 5k in RedcineX?

If you'd like to e-mail me directly my e-mail is whowell at Adobe.

Yes, all clips play fine WITHOUT rocket enabled. When the rocket is ENABLED, I am not able to play 5KHD Resolution files on the timeline, in any type of timeline, though I usually edit on the Red 1080p 23.967 timeline. Where you using 5KHD?

Hi Phil,

I can play that clip in Premiere Pro CC (7.0.1) at 1/4 res on a macbook pro retina with 0 dropped frames.

What are you seeing/expecting?

Thanks

Dave

Hi David, I just wanted to clarify that all clips play fine WITHOUT rocket enabled. WHEN ROCKET IS ENABLED, there is no way to play 5KHD resolution files on the timeline, in any type of timeline, though I usually edit on the Red 1080p 23.967 timeline.
Thanks for your help on this. I know many people have the same problem. Again, files play just fine without the rocket enabled, but render times are killing me. Thanks!!!!!

Question,
I am trying to go conform in Premiere from 5k to 1080 to do some small offline edits however I am having issues. Can you do a media manger like in FCP to down covert the media to 1080? I tried to go to RedCine X with no luck, any suggestions

Well, that didn't last long. My PC version of Premiere once again refuses to play 5K HD files. I updated to 7.0.1 (105) last week and the files played in a timeline. Come back to the project a week later and the files refuse to play. Annoying.

addendum: I read the post above and tried without the RR. Now 5K HD will play without RR, but the performance is rubbish.

Yeesssshhhh is this ever bad. Same as what everyone else is reporting. 5K HD footage only plays back without Rocket enabled. Turn it off and all cores jump to 100% load but clip plays back.
Hi Guys, We are going to need some help to narrow this down. Paul R, you are saying sometimes works doesnt' work? Paul S what is your config?

Thanks

Dave

Hi David

You'll see earlier in the thread that the recent upgrade fixed it. But now a week later it's back to the same behaviour. The only change in this machine has been the reinstallation of QT, although this really shouldn't affect the way PPro plays R3D files.

Hey David, this is what I'm seeing on my end.

System:
Win7/64
Dual Xeon X5650 CPU
48Gb RAM
1x nVidia Quadro 4000 (GUI)
2x nVidea GTX580 (Render)
Red Rocket
BM Decklink Extreme 3D
Internal RAID

All these behaviors are with 5K HD R3D clips.

-If I drag a clip from the bin onto the new item icon and make a sequence that matches its settings I can use the RR for playback. I still get a lot of of media pending screens though. If I double click a clip to open in preview I get 10 seconds of MEDIA PENDING, trying to scrub clips by mousing over in the bin is not functioning in any practical way. The Decklink card only displays black. Render bar is yellow.

-If I use a BM 1080p 8-bit 23.98p sequence preset I can use the RR for playback even though I get a red render bar on the timeline. The playback is a bit choppy and I and will get play back through the Decklink card unless I select the 'scale to frame size option'. If I scale to frame size everything just goes black. If I manually scale the image down so it fits the frame it will play back on both the GUI and the Decklink, although choppy.

- Staying with the same BM preset, if I turn the RR off I get smooth(ish) playback, I can scale to frame size and monitor on both the GUI and the Decklink but every CPU thread jumps right to 100% and the render bar is Red.

When you fix this could it be part of a patch and not a manual file whack-a-mole of the CS6 Epic importer fix?

I'm having the same issue with playback working fine without the Rocket, but when I enable it, playback is frozen on the first frame. 5K anamorphic in a 5K timeline.
I'm running Windows 7, Premiere CC (build 105).
Rocket is running latest firmware and drivers.
6-core i7 Extreme
32GB RAM
2x GTX 580's
Red Rocket
Decklink 4k Extreme

These same problems exist within Adobe Premiere CS 6, without the Rocket it is is fine. With the Rocket it does not work.

Not sure if this is related or not, but I'm having an issue where Premiere CC is crashing consistently while trying to edit 5k HD R3Ds.
It's crashed 5 times in 20 mins. I'm running on a Retina MBP.
Timeline is a BM 1080, 23.976, 8 bit Uncompressed YUV 4:2:2.
Can't even edit the footage without crashing. Any suggestions?
Edit: One other detail...the footage was shot at 48fps.

I might have a solution, as I was having the same problem when trying to play back a UHD 3840x2160 timeline. It turned out to be an audio issue. If you change the audio playback hardware to Line Out or something internal, then it starts working. At least, it worked for me.

Thanks for all the reports of this issue. We now have this reproduced in house and are working on a fix.

That sounds good!! Hope you can fix that very fast!!!

Do you guys also have bad playback with red rocket enabled, when it comes to transitions in the timeline?
Opened a thread few days ago but no answers.

Yes. I cannot playback ANY "5KHD" footage in Premiere 6 or CC when the rocket is enabled. Once I turn the rocket off, it works fine.

Makes me wonder if I should cancel the Rocket-X -.-
