  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Prague... a prototype rig.

Suprised the LCD used as VF is not mounted on the upper left rod on the extending rod with a hood? so it could be rotated fwd for hand held and back for on the dolly?

That rear view is really nice. Just add a "We brake for nobody" and it's perfect!

This is my favorite prototype rig, Prague. She is one of the 25 pre-production units made last month.

Quick Plate is mounted to a Universal Mount Plate.

Jim

Sorry I can't help myself, I'm nit-picky (borderline a...), but with all due respect Jim, and I don't think you can even fathom the amount I have for you; however it looks to me like the Quick Plate is attached to a Top Mount (http://www.red.com/store/product_detail/49), although a Universal Mount could probably have been used.

What intrigues (spelling ? forgive my french) me though, is the way the LCD is attached...

Cheers,
Damien

PS I just got back from IBC and I've been studying all those spare parts quite closely
PPS Since we're at it, what's the Quickplate Adaptor for (http://www.red.com/store/product_detail/73) ?

I like the look of the carbon rods, but they don't seem that practical to me.. Very strong right up to the point where they break under stress of clamping..

Jeff, I wonder what tools are used to let them splinter. The clamps used on rods I know are made for rods. I can't imagine that thing breaking by this use - by many others of course. I wouldn't use them for ENG clashing that thing here, throwing and bumping it there like a good old BVW 300

I would go for the CRP ones, should they be available and appropriate in price, but I guess they would.

While I had a very short time with the CF rods [at NAB], I witnessed internal splintering from tightening accessories on the rods and even gave myself a few CF splinters from brushing my fingers against the ends after a rod had splintered. Granted, I'm sure much has changed since then... but they just never did it for me.

Splintering/exploding aside, the friction coefficient is just too high on the CF rods with whatever coating was used. When you slide something on an aluminium, steel or [presumably] titanium rod, the metal-on-metal contact allows for sliding without much fuss. When you're sliding something metal on an epoxy coating over CF, the metal wins. If something is even slightly out of square, the metal will scrape the coating off. This will eventually weaken the rods in the long term, but will result in aggravation and epoxy dust in the short term.

These are old observations, yes... but I know which I'd put my money on.

Very nice configuration. But I would like it to go hand held in less than 5 sec!!!

How do you frame? With the LCD??? NO... I hope you're joking!

VF is a must have not an option. I know that VF in the latest cameras, like Canon XHA1, is just fisherpricelike but you can't make a 4k camera and frame on a small LCD!

Is it possible to have a shouler mount installed while shooting on tripod (like for other video shoulder camera, to go hand held rapidly?

Thanks.

Pat

Observations, no matter old or new, they are worth pointing out. I've seen too much CF to damn it for splintering. In my experience CFP in general holds up pretty well. But coating and friction are definitive points! Thanks for those - impressions!

I've got 8"x15mm CF rods on an existing setup, and not had any problems with them...

The ends are bevelled and treated, so no splintering there. The coating is also quite strange - not epoxy, more of a semi-matte, semi-gloss finish, which I've found are as good as Alu and Steel.

True, I'd never mount support grips, or bare the weight of the camera using the rods (15mm CF is so light, you just know the camera weight could snap them).

I need to find out who made the rods (I don't the plate support plate manufacturer made them), I suspect that they where made by a car parts company...

CF tubing is surprisingly strong under flex load - it's simple shear you have to look out for - but it depends on the number of 'wraps' of carbon in the lattice (i.e., the wall thickness of the tube).

It could be a matter of a composite approach - perhaps wrap a CF structure with a very thin Al sheet to allow for sliding without risking splintering the outer layer. Or, just find the appropriate resin formula to allow for a less friction-ful surface...

Er, you look at the LCD and see what's in your frame. Studio camera operators have managed like this for a long time. It's a little unergonomic on your shoulder, sure, but it isn't like it's completely impossible!

Excuse me partner but it does look like it's on a Universal mount, actually.
The top mount is just in front of it.

Faites seulement…:nerd:

Emmanuel

Partner ? maybe someday, you in Paris ?

However, about the Prague setup shown on page 1, I beg to differ, for some odd reason there are three top mounts on this camera. I would think a universal mount would be more appropriate, but that's not what's being shown.

I wonder why I'm having all these discussions about the accessories. I made a comment on the thread where PixelTV made some nice diagrams, and it took two posts from myself and another from adaml to figure out the mistake in the diagram...

I'm not looking for trouble, I'm just a little anal retentive I guess, I like things to be precise and well done. It's my worst default and my greatest quality, at the same time.

a+
Damien

PS Faites seulement quoi ?

Sorry Damien
You are right it is a top mount inverted, my bad.

"Faites seulement" is an old swiss expression meaning "you are welcome".

I'm in the south west of France by the way.

Yours

Emmanuel

Hi Emmanuel,
No harm done.

Now that you mention it, I have heard that expression before. How come you're familiar with old swiss expression if I may ask ?

South west, like in oceanside ?

Cheers,
Damien

edit : PS Sorry I guess this has nothing to do with the thread anymore. PM if you care to answer.

The Madness of King Arri

The Madness of King Arri

you know does it strike anyone that no matter how well engineered this ARRI stuff is the prices are way out of whack. I mean some of these things are small pieces of metal and they cost thousands.

there are only so many ways you can make a matte box or a follow focus unit. if it were electronic and had thousands of hours of coding behind it i could understand the pricing maybe. like the red camera , jim and the guys really did massive amounts of work on that and still kept it at a reasonable price.

sometimes I think we're all being taken for idiots. a few cogs , a wheel and some bits and we pay 3 or 4 grand and then couple of hundred for extra size cogs which amounts to a molded piece of lego. you could practically buy a small car for the price of an ARRI MB20 and a FF4. I'm pretty sure a hell of a lot more engineering went into the car. I know economies of scale. but still we need more companies with RED's theology. there are plenty of indies out there that would buy if the price was right and that would give you some scale. I know redrock is doing this to a degree. seems to be a snobbishness when it comes to their stuff from quite a few cinematographers I've talked to.

Jim any chance of you guys doing your own matte box and follow focus for the RED when you've gotten most of the features added. I have pretty much decided I only want to shoot on red when it comes to my own projects. so I'd be happy to buy all RED gear

ok I'll step off the soap box now

We are working on a lot of accessories...
