  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

How are people powering their EPIC's?

The REDVolts are great but only last 20min's and take 3/4 hours to recharge.
V-Locks are great but totally mess up the whole slick modular design of EPIC with bits and pieces hang off everywhere.

Are RED making a Battery that is a module, so like a V Lock battery but the shape of a EPIC module so it clicks into place?

Is there a Rapid REDVolt charger coming?

What's the deal with powering the EPIC?

It's still early. We do not yet have REDVOLT modules or quad chargers to fully exploit the capabilities of the REDVOLT system. Right now I think most people have found the traditional V-lock batteries are still the most efficient way to go. I think in some markets, this will remain the case for a long time to come. However, I also think that for many people, REDVOLTS show immense potential that has yet to be realized. Let the Epic platform mature a little bit and I think you will find many options to suit your personal shooting style that you may not even be aware of yet.

yes I think the trick to getting the REDVolts is a rapid charger.
I love their form factor but only 20min life is not really functional.

EPIC has been out in the wild for sometime now.

Make that a 4 position rapid charger with 12-240V AC/DC voltage inputs and LED charging status on each bay. That the quickest fix for the battery issue since chargers are a bunch more easy to design and manufacturer than batteries.

yes something that charges all 4 batteries at the same time in a rapid fashion.
I'm not sure what the technology is like with battery chargers but it makes sense that RED would be getting the best out there as you need to power the camera's and keep them powered and the REDVolt size is amazing compared to the V-Lock system.

I must say its cool using my 5DmII that lasts for ages on one small battery

I'm starting to worry about the efficiency of the quad battery module. I believe the Redvolts are 37 watts. Four of them would make 148 watts, just a bit more than a brick. But 4 Redvolts cost $750. So how many Redvolts will we need to get through a day, even with the Quad module? I'd think at least 12. And even if the XLs are cheaper, you're looking at having at least 6. Not to mention the quad module is $1900. It comes with stage 2, but you'll have to buy one for the M. 3rd party solutions or old-school V-locks may be the way to go...

Yes when you think about powering a Remote Follow Focus Gears, Wireless HD etc... you'll be drawing more power than just running the camera by itself.

I love the REDVolts size but it they don't power the camera then its not going to work. Maybe the REDVolt is a backup power source for when you have to shoot tight spaces and need the camera stripped down to just the brain & side handle.

Powering the camera seems to still be up in the air for a elegant solution that works with the whole modular purpose of EPIC.

I plan on using Redvolts for handheld work (using the side handle) and Anton Bauer is Studio Mode. I just got the correctly wired QR Epic plate.

is that the QR-Epic plate from Anton Bauer?
I looked at that and its still goes against the whole modular design

Use v-locks now and think ahead to using Redvolts.

I do use my Redvolts now when I need a super-light setup, like on cranes or gyros.

Ditto, I have a 1D3 and a Phase One camera which both have a multi-bay battery charger. The Phase charger is da bomb. Agreed that the 5D battery lasts a weirdly long time. Canon must use electrolytes ; - )

What kind of v mount batts are you using? To feed zoom motor and or wireless focus gear it seems that red bricks are not enough.
Any advice?

How can be Epic-X power on? How can we connect Redvolte is DSMS side module is not in the package for Stage 2?
People who recieved Epic-X how you power Epic-X on and shooting? Can you shooting? I see the video with turned on Epic-X but can't see where is buttary is connected?:)
Can I connect V-lock batteries fron RED one to Epic-X?

Somebody who recieved Epic-X put please photo of how your Epic-X is getting power

Having both works. We would do big handheld with v batts than super skele handheld with lcd, ultra, hand grip and thats it. amazing small.

what sort of duration are people getting with the REDBrick V Lock batteries compared to the RedVolts?
