So last night I finally got around to trying something I never had before - powering the camera via the 5 pin power cable. It doesn't work!

I turned the charger on (with no batteries attached), then connected the cables and tried to turn on the Red. On the first attempt, the rear LCD lit up for maybe 1/2 a second then went dead again. All subsequent attempts resulted in absolutely nothing.

Why is this?

Hey Shawn, I've had similar problems with the AC adaptor. Try connecting the connection from the wall into the charger. That cord comes loose easily...

No, the power light on the charger was on.

I feel you Shawn. Hooking up the Lemo to the charger should be brain dead but in fact there is a little trick to make it work that Brook showed me. You plug in the charger, hit the power switch and as soon as the light turns green power the camera (you have less than 5 seconds).

Evidently the folks that got their cameras later have an AC to camera rig that does not require the charger. I wonder if we get one of those if we just ask? Brent...

Shawn,

Was the "AUX" light on?

Just to clarify what Blair said. You must first attach the Lemo cord to both the charger and the camera. Then turn the charger on and wait for the "AUX" light to come on. Only at that point are you supposed to power up the RED. If you tried it that way and it didn't work, then, well..... I got nothin.

Only for a short period of time when we did not have stock of the 10 ft DC POWER CABLE (from RED ONE to CHARGER) did we supply people with an AC POWER ADAPTOR in lieu of the cable so they could still run house power.

You should definitely be able to power RED ONE from CHARGER using the DC POWER CABLE. If you need us to eval the CHARGER and the CABLE, just send it on in!

I also had problems. It took me a few times just to get the charger light to come on. Once it came on I was able to power the camera.

I'm having the same problem. The green aux light never comes on, and the camera won't boot.

The power indicator comes on, and it is able to charge batteries. But no green aux light.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

I figured this one out almost right away. Turn off the charger. Attach cable to camera. (Camera is off during this entire process) Attach a battery to charger. Turn on the charger. The battery light will flash for ten seconds. Turn off the charger. Then power the charger up again after a few seconds. The aux power light will come on and stay on. Remove battery from charger and your good to go for powering up camera from aux power from charger. Sometimes I have to cycle power a couple times on the charger but the aux power only wants to come on with cable attached to camera and battery attached in the charger. Weird but this technique has never failed. I used to think you needed two batteries but lately its worked with one.

Hey Craig,

Wow, that worked!

So do you need to use the workaround every time you need to power the camera, or does it only act up once in a while?

Thanks again,

Jim

Jim, just emailed you back on your support ticket...

Brent, thanks for your lighting fast response after hours! Don't you guys sleep?!

I thought I might hear back in a day or two, not within 20 minutes at 7pm in California!

You guys are the best. It's been said before and will be said again.

Cheers,

Jim

Will you be more impressed if I say it is close to 10pm actually in California? Haha!

No problem at all, Jim. We'll talk more tomorrow...

I use it whenever I want to use the aux power. Its something in the logic of the unit. Since the batteries don't charge while your powering the camera from the aux power and I couldn't get the aux power to work directly, I concluded there was a connection between the batteries and the aux power activation. So I tried this method and it worked right away. I don't even think about it as a workaround, just the activation sequence for aux power. (Technique 17)

Same kind of thing as when the camera has been sitting for a while and doesn't boot up right away. I power the camera down, wait ten or fifteen seconds and then power it up. It always boots the second time without fail. (Technique 12)

Oh Yeah! I was thinking of our summer, when daylight savings is reversed. Being a former Californite myself I should know that!

Now I'm REALLY impressed! :w00t:

I have a related question or request: can one power their camera from the charger with only the batteries attached? And if not, could this be a feature for an updated charger? It would be handy to be able to power the camera from the charger being able to swap out batteries so I wouldn't have to power down to do it. Am I asking the impossible here?

We had the same problem on the exhibition a few days ago. I also found out that you only get less than 5 seconds to power on the camera , because the light is only green for a few secs.
When all of this fails you can also just plug out the cables, plug them in starting from the power source > charger > camera. (all of this when the camera is off and the charger is off too) Then turn on the charger with your finger ready on the camera power button. Then when the light goes green, let you magical quick finger do its work and turn on the camera. This way we didnt have any problems, but I didn't dare to turn of the camera that easily anymore.

Best solution is to buy the Red AC adapter at under $140.
I have the same problem with the charger but the AC adapter
is always ready for action.
