  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Power straight from charger doesn't work

Evidently the folks that got their cameras later have an AC to camera rig that does not require the charger. I wonder if we get one of those if we just ask? Brent...

I bought one with my camera. $135.00 from memory, ideal in the studio , no battery changes or delays.

Money well spent.

I just got my chargers and they all have the same behaviour to some extent, but all work if you power on the camera during the brief time the Aux power LED is lit up green. This thread should be a sticky as this behaviour is not mentioned in the charger manual (which needs updating about this, and proofreading as there are several non critical typos in it!).

EDIT: Actually, thinking about the logic of it, it's NOT a fault! When the charger is powered up and detects that the 10ft DC cable is terminated (with, say, a camera) it switches an internal relay to divert power to the Aux power socket and the green Aux power LED comes on (the Aux port is only powered for as long as the Aux LED is on, so it's an accurate indication).

However, as the RED One camera is off until you press the camera ON/OFF button, it does not detect a power draw and so switches the internal relay and reverts to the default of looking for batteries being connected.

With the relay in this state it won't look further at the Aux port until such time as the charger is repowered OR it detects the termination on the Aux port has changed (disconnecting/reconnecting the 10ft DC cable OR pressing the ON/OFF button on the camera will do this) which will switch the relay to power the Aux port again and lights the Aux green LED. If you then press the camera ON/OFF during the time the Aux green LED is on, the camera powers up everytime.

This logic explains the charger behaviour describe by Brook, Blair and redrunner (http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?p=174503#post174503). I 'm not sure about Craig Bowman's workaround (http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?p=273459#post273459) which obviously works but seems a bit more fiddly, less reliable and requires a battery.

If the Aux green LED never comes on then it's probably a fault!

Note: if the RED One ON/OFF switch was a hardwired 2-pole switch rather than a momentary push-to-make soft control button, this wouldn't be an issue. I suspect the charger is a modified third party unit originally intended for use with equipment with hardwired mechanical ON/OFF switches. Just speculating...

Ha! Just ran into this little used scenario again, and had to remind myself of my own solution! Sticky, or update the charger manual?
