  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Post Your Scarlet-X Rig

Also do you need to make any adjustment with the juicebox (such are rewiring the cables) or can you just plug it in out of the box to get it working?

Nope, the cable they provide works just fine out of the box.

Interesting solution to mount the Follow Focus on top! How does it work?

Actually very well. It focuses in the "wrong" direction (which I actually like and think is correct) and is up and out of the way. And since I don't have a fancy double-sided FF this solution gives the 1st all the room they need as we aren't fighting on one side of the camera.

The adjustable shoulder pad set up mounted to the long base plate works really well for balancing on the shoulder regardless of battery or lens configuration.

wow, this rig looks very versatile, congrats on it, a lot of thinking must have gone into it :-)
would you mind sharing what shoulder pad and LONG baseplate you are using? and is the shoulder pad tilt-adjustable?

@ Stu LOL.
Surely you've got stuff in Alaska you can use as a backdrop.....like Polar bears ........or Sarah Palin :0. For power, I use both Redvolts & v mounts, just not mounted when the pics where taken. The shoulder mount is the Shoot 35 one see below for the link.

@ Peter
Thanks for the positive comment, noticed you just took delivery of your TI/PL......... NICE...serious envy!!!!

@ Jochem
Thanks for the nice comments. No the shoulder mount isn't tilt adjustable between the plate & the mount. I don't think it needs it, with its gentle curvature it sort acts like a pivot point on the shoulder, like a door hinge.

Here's the shopping list for the items that make up the shoulder mount. Hope this helps.

Shoot 35 Shoulder Pad http://www.shoot35.com/products/shoulder support/Shoulder Pad/shoulderpadframe.html
I removed the 15 mm rod support ( Good for reuse on the top plate) & just bolted (easy, no drilling its all interchangeable.) onto one of these .

Manfrotto QR System http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Manfrott...ultDomain_0&hash=item58927d5c9e#ht_4797wt_927

And then slide mounted to one of these. (Enage/disengage takes seconds)
Manfrotto Long Plate http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Manfrott...ultDomain_0&hash=item5892a46f18#ht_4269wt_927

Total cost for the above about $230 ish. The handles & yoke for the front end I purchased basically new & unused from various Red One owners. With Epic X stage 3 happening there are a ton of professional cinema accessories out there with no camera looking for a new home again around $200 ish for 2 handles, yoke & 15mm/19mm mounting block. You could most probably do even better now given how much of this stuff is out there for sale.

Mike your shouldermount system is really unique and looks and sounds quite clever. I still don't fully get it. Would you mind showing it a bit clearer? Also how you mounted all the rods there. If you'd like to share? Thanks!

@ Patrick

I posted on another thread here..... http://www.reduser.net/forum/showth...-rail-systems-for-Scarlet&p=968834#post968834 a shopping list of items plus why I have gone this route........

Also here are some tighter detail shots . As stated in the earlier post if you don't need or want the 2nd set of rails just mount the long plate directly underneath the QR system & 15 mm block & plate. If your thinking of going the route i have gone you will need to bolt a small plate as a joiner between the 2 systems.

Looks like a great solution for those on a budget, thank you.

Thx mike. I'm on my mobile right now but this seems to be very detailed. Looks like a great inexpensive solution! Thanks a ton for sharing!

@Mike I do the same QR adjustment for my lenses too, I highly recommend it to others using a variety of lenses with different lengths. Seems easier to me to move the camera on the rig than the FF/MB etc since being able to slide the camera back also gives extra room in the absense of a swing away mattebox and moving the camera instead of the AKS helps rebalance the rig a bit.

Scarlet on the cheap !

Hi guys, here is my rig on the cheap. Coming from the DSLR world, I am not the super - rich guy who can afford all the stuff. So here is my solution :

a) Proaim Matte Box and follow focus from India with Rod
b) From China Rod Risers to adjust the height
c) Original Battery Plate from Red

And : ready to shoot. Looking forward for your feedback !

Thx mike. This looks truly inexpensive and its really very clever. This could get a lot if people going as long as they are on a budget, before coming back to the gunner or the clutch ;) I'll check it out! Thanks again for sharing your detailed info!

Congrats on your camera Joel. In my experience, I really don't like having the camera higher than my own eyes. I'm 5-10 and my rig is on the border of being to high. Depending on how tall you are, you may find that shoulder pad too thick.

Hi Joel

Is that the canon 24-70?
if so, how does it work with your matte box - does the extending front element cause issues?
trying to figure out how to best make that lens work with a matte box.

cheers

Is the fact that the 24-70 is a telescoping lens the reason why your donut is not flush?

Nice,

Very compact! I think it's great, does it balance out?

No it doesn't quite balance out yet, still waiting on V-lock batteries which should do the trick once mounted on rear for counter balance. I also have another monitor which I can attach when on shoulder. It's tricky getting the perfect rig. To mount onto tripod I just remove shoulder brace which is mounted on manfrotto quick release plate. Follow focus is the hardest part, works fine on 24-70mm lens (Which I really hate) but doesn't reach on the 50mm lens (Which I really like). I'll get it perfect eventually. :)
