  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Post Your Scarlet-X Rig

Pretty simple and clean handheld or slider type of rig. We have a more extensive studio rig in the works and will post up a photo when complete.

Can you focus decently with the SmallHD EVF?

I've had no problem with my DP4 w/ EVF. It has several focus assist options, and when combined with the cameras focus assist options, it's fairly easy to get hit your marks. I use mine in monochrome mode with RED's punch in and edge detect. I'm sure there's a trade off with the price, but it's worked well so far.

Hmm. Like so many others, I'm so confused as to which EVF to invest in.

I like shooting handheld so it sometimes is unpredictable with regards to reframing and movement. Oftentimes, with run and gun style of shooting, I don't have time to measure and set marks. I find that RED 5" LCD is just OK with focusing so a reliable EVF is a must.

I currently don't have the funds for the RED BOMB EVF, so the SmallDP looks like a viable option. I've tried the Zacuto one, and I thought it was just OK.

BTW, thanks for the input Ben!

Of course, Anthony.

For what it's worth, all of the samples I posted here on page 2 and 3 (minus the candle test) were shot with just a DP4/EVF: http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?71354-Scarlet-645/page2

I tried out the Zacuto too and was underwhelmed. Even though the resolution and features are similar to the DP4, I liked the size, build, and features (and price) of the DP4 better. Granted the larger screen will eat through batteries quicker, but the canon batteries are affordable.

Like it. I'm going similar way.
Would you please tell me what you put on top (blocks, handle, top plate)?
Battery is a Globalmediapro 160w on VF adapter or some kind of gold mount?
Thanks

Looks like all wooden camera stuff - top 15mm mount, side handle and battery plate are all WC from the looks of it.

Here's me clutch rig.... Settled on using a 5" noga for the EVF, but did toy around with kludging together an EVF mount using the second support pad of the clutch (the shot with the Red LCD onboard). It was OK, but not as versatile.

(For whatever reason, my cat decided to be in both of these photos. I had previously spent 15 minutes chasing the thing around the apartment with the camera trying to test the hypothesis that he's 18% grey.)

Hey Alvise,
We purchased a number of items from Wooden Camera, all of which are very robust and well made! We used the Easy Riser on the bottom and the easy plate on top which allowed us to mount a LW15 Top rail mount and the side handle. This setup allowed us to use a neat little sliding handle (Lanporte from eBay) we already had on the top rails which slides front to rear to balance the load. Having the combination of side and top handle is really nice. This little bugger is pretty beefy and it helps to have a couple of secure places to hold it. We have been on Sony EX1s and Canon 5Ds (and similar smaller form factor cameras) so long, that I forgot how heavy our old ENG style cameras were. The Scarlet with a real battery and all the goodies (as pictured) weighs in at about 15 1/2 lbs. Gonna need to eat my Wheaties LOL!!!

The rear AB battery mounting stuff is from Wooden Camera as well. The only beef with that is a rather lengthy cord, which is no big deal, I just like really clean setups. The battery is www.batteries4broadcast.com and are 150Wh rated and very nice. A kit with two batteries and dual concurrent charger is $1000. Probably going to last about 2.5 hours of run time... about what it takes us to get through the average day of shooting.

HA! I've always thought my cat was ~18% grey too... too squirmy to work as an effective grey card though :-\

I finally have a rig to post:

Noga arm attached directly to 3/8" hole on Manfrotto head.

I see you have an articulating arm connected to something below the camera, but I can't really tell what that is. Is that a rod attachment-type plate?

Nice one Ben, it looks like you've got the side handle too...
What monitor and cover are you using there? Would it work on the 5" RED TOUCH as well?

Love me some side handle. Use it to navigate more than the touch screen.

The other monitor is a DP4 with the EVF attachment. It's pretty much tailored to the DP4, so doubtful that it will work on anything else.

Close. Noga arm into one of the many the 1/4-20 holes on the Wooden Camera easy riser.

It has been long coming and even longer wait since I have ordered it on the 3rd November last year - but it is finally here...

Needless to say the Titanium mount looks like it will outlast the camera - which itself is built like a tank. This is just a temporary config with REDROCK MICRO gear until I get my GUNNER mod sorted out. Good points about this setup is that it allows for instant swap to shoulder mount (the LCD will be mounted on noga to facilitate this) and while on tripod - the handles provide a firm grip to operate the camera smoothly on the tripod - kinda like studio setup with two handles, but better in my opinion...

Here are some more angles:

As You can see from the last photo - I am still waiting for the DSMC Side Handle to complete the basic setup. I will later post more pics of the final setup, as well as some footage...
