  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Post your BT R1 MX rigs!

I have the 5dII O/P on my rig, and the menu shows up fine. No idea about the H though.

I thought it was the 5DII-OP but maybe it's all of them in that series!

I bet ET are not happy they missed out a top mount!

Hi Nick, I am using the Nikon mount purchased directly from RED. So far I am loving the Rokinon 14mm Cine lens. I was worried about it being soft at the edges, but from what I can see it is pretty sharp. The one thing that gets me is the Nikon focusing direction. I am used to broadcast lenses or Canon lenses that all focus in one direction where Nikon and Nikon mount lenses focus opposite. I find myself often going the wrong direction.

Here is a snapshot out of REDCINE-X from some footage taken with the Rokinon 14mm. 4K 16:9, Redcode 36.

Thanks for the post Chris... I ended up going the Nikon route. Got my Optitek on the way and a Rokinon 85 -- My photog buddy has a killer set of leicas so I'll be testing those out before I know if i want to expand futher on the Rokinons...

Nice pic! Gotta love SD! :D

Thanks Nick. The small size and JPEG compression don't do them justice. Would love to hear how you like the 85. That is another lens I am contemplating.
Cheers!

2 Freya - :) both sides are unhappy!

2 Chris Pyle and nickmilo
I have Rokinon 35mm 1.4 and imho it is not sharp at all. would never use it on RED.

Hiya Scheglov!

I hope it arrives soon, but looks like you are ready to go for now anyway!
If you run into problems I might be selling my ET top mount depending on what I work out.
I'm sure you will work it out one way or another in time anyway!

Hi Scheglov, I'm curious, do you have the older version of the 35, or is the Cine version? I have heard some good things about the 85mm, but I had not heard much about the 35.
Thanks.

Thank you Freya! I'll keep it in mind.

2 Chris Pyle:
I have older - non-cine version. As far as i now the difference is only in that ring. Rokinon or Samyang or something else (don't remeber the other brands) are just the same and the parts are coming from same sources. As you know they are completely Chinese and you still won't expect much nowadays. This is my opinion. I won't use any of them with RED, but may use for some cases with dslr. It is very tempting to get f/1.4 for that money and also "cinevised"

The problems for me with Rokinon are:
1 - Lack of sharpness.
2 - Very colourful fringe and edges of objects.

I compare them with Nikons I use with RED. But of course it is not scientific comparison, but based only on my viewing and editing experience.

Some people say that when taking Rokinon you have to take about 6 lenses of the same model and compare, because their quality may vary.

P.S. Chris, may we have fullres R3D snapshot of you example? what aperture have you used?

There's a pretty lengthy thread all on the Rokinon Cine's -- not sure if you've seen it, but its a good read. Lots of examples and stills...

Please forgive my ignorance, but I'm not sure exactly how to post a full-res R3D. Could someone walk me through it or point me in the right direction? I would be happy to post.
I believe aperture was somewhere around 16 or 22.
Thanks

Thank you Chris! After reading a thread about Rokinons I'm changing my mind about them, and going to give more tests for my 35 f1.4.

R3D definitely looks good! I think it's time to move to Rokinons thread.

My pleasure. Sorry it took me a while to get to it. I can upload the video of that same shot to Vimeo as well. I'll post a link when I get it loaded.
I don't have much to compare to, to know how good (or bad) the lens really is, but it seems sharp to me and does what I need it to do, so that is all that really matters. I am not shooting anything at the moment for large screen playback, but if I did, I would probably rent some better lenses.

Thank you for the examples Chris. Strange thing - it has the same soft image feeling as I experience with my 35mm.. Ok, it may be just imagination))

You are probably right about being a little soft, these are inexpensive lenses.... I don't expect miracles from them. But like I said, it serves a purpose for me right now. Plus, a little softness isn't always a bad thing... :-)

BT RED ONE MX #10,148.

Red Base Production Rig, Tilta hand grips, ProAim Matte Box (cheaper but works great), Fotga follow focus (again, cheap, but no issues yet), Nikon lens mount with Zeiss 35mm 1.4 (also have 21mm 2.8, and 50mm 1.4).

She's still not named...
