  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Portable dolly

I just bought one of those Losmandy Spider dolly's. Thanks for the advice. Anyone know where to get some metal tracks?

Hey have you used it and if so, what do you think about it. I am looking into buying one too. Why are you looking for metal tracks. Are their rubber tracks not good enough?..

I have used it and it is smooth. There were a few times I did a pass and it moved/wobbled very slightly, so I wouldn't say it's 100% perfect. I'm very certain this was contributed to the rubber tracks, not the dolly.

I think for any dolly less than a Phantom, Panther or Elemack, this is your best bet. The rubber tracks are great to use, but I believe you could get almost perfect performance with metal tracks. The rubber tracks are great for when you can't get the metal tracks through a doorway or they need to bend slightly around an object. Otherwise, it's best to use metal tracks all the time.

By the way, I'm using the 4-leg spider dolly (not the 3 leg version). This is the "ride-along" version. Keep your eye out for one on ebay. I got a really good deal.

I too am looking for a portable Dolly System. The Losmandy Spider Dolly looks cool:

http://www.abelcine.com/store/3-Legged-Spider-Dolly-with-Set-of-3-track-wheels/#tabs

It's $1200, plus $600 for track:

But I don't understand what it has over the Flex Dolly, which is half the price:

http://www.flexdolly.com/index.php?cPath=1

And it comes with flexible rubber track, $600 all told. Looks like the best deal out there, if it works well.

The Singleman Dolly looks good too, $500, but another $600 for track, and you have to choose curved or straight:

http://www.indiedolly.com/htmlfolder/IndieDollyFrameset.html

Same thing with the Supreme, which is $600, but you get 12 wheels, as opposed to 6:

EDIT: forgot the link: http://dvcity.com/dve/product_info.php?products_id=344

The Super Track Dolly looks the most robust (it'll hold up to 600 lbs, and nicely priced), but also the least portable:

http://www.longvalleyequip.com/dolly.php

There are a couple others that look nice but only work for straight track, so they're out of the running, unless someone can enlighten me as to why you'd want a straight-track only dolly when you can have one that does both straight and curved.

I'd love to hear if anyone has any experience with the FlexDolly.

My dolly preference is the Bellare from Cinevate

Hi
I´m looking for a portable dolly and tracks.
Fast to mount and with a nice price.
Working with red and miller tripods.
Any sugestion?

Really great product solutions and price points suggested in this thread.
Here is the system I use for my R1 shoots from Cinevate.
This thing is flippin' amazing and there is a 10% discount being offered until March.

Modular and upgradeable starting at $1300 for the base unit.
Flies 500 lbs yet is super light weight.
Add a jib arm or operator seat or my favorite the low shot kit with reversible Mitchell/150 mm ball mount.

The customer support is great from these guys.
Check out the demo video here under Bellare:

I've gotten the entire system down to two airline checkable Storm cases with 24 feet of straight track (schedule 40 1" PVC). I'll post some field pics. I am using this set up on jungle islands around the world for a current project.

Have fun or stay home,

Hello All,

My name is Onno Perdijk, 'owner' of SolidGripSystems and manufacturer of the TwinDolly (and other track-based-products).

At this moment we do not have a dealer in the USA yet, but that can change anyday. For now we are selling from Europe.

A TwinDolly including TwinTube (1m20, 1m00, 0m75) and some additional accesoires like juniorstuds and endstops is 3.200 euro excl. shippingcosts.

Please post here or contact me for further information.

Good Luck,

Onno Perdijk

If you want serious gear that is portable, consider the Cartoni Studio Dolly. It's a very heavy duty floor spreader with heavy duty ball barring wheels. A group of us used this for a shoot in December and were totally surprised on how smooth it worked. Wheels lock in so that you can crab or go in any angle you want w/o need of track. Model we used was for interior floors, but they have an exterior model with bigger pneumatic tires. Package folds down to 30"L x 10"h x something like 14" W.

Mitch sent me a fabulous shot of swim racers jumping into a pool off risers, done with RED, slow mo, and Long Valley Super Track dolly, straight and curved track. Mitch, can you post a link? It's amazing.
