HI
Please help I have downloaded a selection of short R3D clips (2k 3k 4k)
When I view them in Redalert the quality is poor (not sharp with poor colour saturation and contrast quality) -worse then home video.

When I render and export them to Prores 422 HQ (full debayer quailty) I get the same.

Also when I convert them at full quailty with Redrushes I get the same low
quality.

Is it possible to shoot such bad quality with Red one or am I doing some thing wrong.(I feel that there should be some straight forward way for an Editor to view raw footage to evaluate before and edit.

Thanks for any imput
Tanya

Where did you download these files from? It's definitely possible to shoot bad quality imagery with the RED. Poor exposure and poor lighting will get a poor picture.

What program are you using to edit? The R1 can make quicktime proxy files for you to edit in your NLE...If you are using Avid, you can convert the files to DnX-HD or whatever it's called.

Did you do an S-curve on the footage? Did you apply any sort of grade to the footage?

Very little info here...

Tonya,

First of all, this is a REAL NAME forum. You should register with your real name, not your company, website, username, etc. Moving along,

As Justin said, it is possible to shoot bad RED footage, if its over/under exposed or out of focus. Those two conditions aside, it is very difficult to shoot RED footage that isn't recoverable in some sense, due to the RAW nature in which the RED shoots.

I would suggest posting links to these "short" R3D file (if possible), and/or posting screen-shots of RedAlert viewing the images, since this will give us a complete picture including the processing settings used to decode the R3D files. I don't know what REDUSER's policy is regarding posting images for new user, but you may have to post the images on a photo-sharing site, and then link to them in your post.

Sorry about the non real name
I do this because as a female user I have in the past had unwanted private information distributed on the net which has led to my picture being added to sex dating sites collected by web crawler apps. (nothing connected with this site)
This leads to google searches on my name coming up sex sites (not good for my cv)
sorry again will change if possible.
please advise
Tanya

Maybe someone else can put into better words what I'm about to say.

RAW in its essence is flat, there's no processing happening on camera, the camera is just recording as much information as possible, and you need to develop it in post.

There are workarounds to get good footage on the fly, choosing REDSpace as a gamma curve on RED Cine should get you that.

However, if you want to grade the footage, you start with a flat image (REDLog), with as much information as possible, in order to turn this:

Into this:

This footage that I've graded was also shot by Peter Majtan, with RPPs.

I cant' upload pictures with my present membership status
and of course if I reduce the file size it's hard to see quality.
On the site from where I downloaded the R3d files there are some sill images of the footage, These are not good quality but might not represent the footage.
Yes the lighting is not good and the camera skills might not be good but I was
gratefull that some one had made the effort so cant complain.
Perhaps you would be kind enough to direct me to some where I can download a small sample of quality footage so that I can rule out the source of the footage as
a problem.
Here is the link to the download site.

Low light is not exactly where a ISO 320 sensor is going to shine.

So no wonder you think some of those footage is bad.

Also notice that Build 16 and the introduction of the new color science improved the R1 image quality a lot. That post is pretty old.

Here's another link with better looking footage:

Thanks for uploading the jpeg examples.
yes I see the difference between the two, but I am not getting the kind of lack of quality shown in the first example.
So if in Redalert I cant see hi def quality at what process or stage could I be going wrong during the input of the R3d file --presuming the file is good quality.
Tanya

Maybe u have the settings set to a 1/8th debayer etc, low quality preview settings in red alert/red cine?

Tanya,

What is your objective here and what is your position in the production hierarchy?

If you are the editor you should expect the DoP to deliver you footage that has at least been one lighted in some format more friendly to an editorial workflow than R3D.

If he/she was shooting film it would be telecine'd and you'd be injesting something off tape that he's already had a pass at at the lab.

What Pietro is pointing out (quite well in my opinion) is that the RAW data is in fact a camera negative. You should not expect it to look like the kind of beautiful image you're used to seeing. It needs 'a trip to the lab' before it's really ready for public consumption.

This might generally be done by the DIT after in depth consultation with the DoP while they are still on set (or after if it was too hectic).

Contemporary workflow would have the R3D data transcoded by the DIT (or DoP in some cases) into something more editorial friendly like ProRes 422 at some reasonable resolution like 1920*1080.

You'd edit with this and then the DoP would reconform the R3D or DPX files in a grading suite using the EDL from editorial.

More to the point of your problem (the footage looks like poo). Well, I downloaded A002_C011_07231V_001 and had a look and, well, it looks like poo. The exposure is horrible and the histogram shows an image that makes use of only half the dynamic range of the sensor (yes that's from bad exposure). Don't judge the camera based on this.

The camera is far more capable than this footage demonstrates.

Hi J

I am editor in the production hierarchy.

I would love it if DOPs handed me ready to edit files, it seems that where-ever I edit the Editor is expected do everything.
but thats ok as I need no know more then just my scope so as to make sure I am getting the correct material in the correct
format.
Perhaps I have wrongly believed that a R3d Raw files could be imported into Redalert for colour correction if this is not the case
why does it have this import facility.

I also though the point of the Red camera was that it didn't have to be telecined (especially in the case of digital broadcasting)

I apologise if any of this is naive but I am completly new to Red

Thanks everyone for your imputs

It looks like the R3d footage that I downloaded was bad quality.no disrespect meant
to the uploader (always grateful for a persons contribution)

Hi Troy,

In Redalert I set the debayer settings to high in lefthand side control pannel (is there
more debayer settings I should adjust in Redalert)

I am afraid I cant yet use Redcine yet as it freezes on the black with red icon page and locks up my Mac (dont want try that to much).

Thanks everyone for your inputs

It seems that I have downloaded some poor quaility R3d files,( no disrespect meant
to the uploader as I am always grateful for a persons contributions).

Please note that I was not saying that the Red Camera or its output was of poor quality but I think it was clear that I was talking about poor
quality R3d files, which from my experiance can happen to all files sometime.

Tanya,

Nothing personal, but I had to ban you - just as I ban every new member (and increasingly also older ones) I come across that does not adhere to the real name policy.

If you feel uncomfortable with giving your full name, you can just use either your first or last name as an initial; I could be either M. Weiss or Martin W.

I don't get to visit Red User like I did back in the day when we had to deal with the ignorant trolls of the past on a minute to minute basis and we needed this real name policy (which I completely agree with btw). But honestly an opportunity was lost today... A chance to help educate this self exclaimed red newbie (who is not a native English speaking person) in the massive benefits of how to handle the digital negative that the Red creates when shooting. Now I totally understand and appreciate the real name policy... But let's be fair, there are several people here who get by without using their real names. Like Evolve and Digital FX. If you are going to have these rules then let them be uniform across the board. No offense to Greg from Dfx btw...

Martin, I like you and I really appreciate what Jarred has provided us here, but honestly this needs to be applied to everyone. Martin, I wish this could have been handled and resolved with a pm. I honestly don't think she realized completely how things work around here...

Best of luck and Happy Holidays to all of you...

Sounds like Hypocrosy to me

I think your motives are not true and after all any one can make up a name
just look at me I am now Edward Bristol.
Get Real.
My real Name is Tanya Morugy

MORUGY.COM

I actually posted an apology and asked for advice on my mistake
I also included my real second name (morugy) and the reasons for doing things that way.
So in fact I had conformed to your revised regulations (above) and was trying to take part in an informed and sensible dialog unlike some of your postings.

I think you have been unnesasarily arrogant and high handed and if I was to operate
in such an unprofessional manner my company would go bust.

p.s guess you have to ban me again for making up this name Edward Bristol
