  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Poor quaility r3d

Tanya...

Tanya...

I actually posted an apology and asked
I think you have been unnesasarily arrogant and high handed and if I was to operate
in such an unprofessional manner my company would go bust.

p.s guess you have to ban me again for making up this name Edward Bristol

There are many things that can go wrong on this board. Arrogant people sometimes show up that'd better go out shooting than post here. Turns to the big fanboy club at times, too. And to non native speakers, arrogance can derive from americans behaving like... americans, just the way they can behave elsewhere. I mean, some of them. Can be irritating... They developed and marketed the Red one, let's them have it :-) !!

However, most of the people here, noticeably red people and others with great achievements in the industry, are benevolent, humble like experienced people inevitably are, and very helpful.

Regarding real names policy, I myself, who always used my real name, was suspected to use a fake one... Just don't worry and be back on this thread/forum, because all you will experience will benefit other newbies.

Guys and Gals,

Chill.

These issues have been discussed ad nausea many times before, over the course of many, many months. We are long finished with that discussion. When you sign up, it says in big bold letters that a Real Name is required. Everyone who gets banned does get information along with it on how to resolve it.

There have been stickies and shout-outs across the board for many months, announcing the Real Name policy change.

Tanya,

those regulations are not "revised" as you put it, but have been in force for quite some time now. Just shoot an email to jason at landmine dot tv to get things sorted out for you (preferably with your first account).

Why didn't you just register as either "Tanya M" or "T. Morugy". Using a fake name does indeed lead to banning. Again, you agreed to those rules when you signed up.

Call me arrogant for enforcing something you chose to ignore. I'm not trying to be nasty here, but we have to agree on certain rules made by the owner of this forum. If you don't agree, you are still very welcome to passively participate.

I don't mind a hefty debate, but do not like being called a liar in public.

Hypocrisy is the act of pretending to have (especially) unwavering or long-term beliefs, opinions, virtues, feelings, qualities, or standards that one does not actually have. Hypocrisy is thus a kind of lie.
Buhot,

The real name policy states to have at least one initial and one full name (first or last). So you are not yet complying to that one.

Andrew/Sally,

When you look closer, you will see that quite a few of those "old timers" have changed into a real name of late. Some have indeed been banned. The others will follow or will also eventually lose their posting privileges.
Reason that other, new members slip through without adhering to the Real Name policy is that all mods are doing this in their spare time, unpaid.

And I disagree with the notion that an opportunity has been lost today. a) the discussion still goes on b) Tanya can re-activate her membership as laid out in the banning notification.

Hi J

I am editor in the production hierarchy.

I would love it if DOPs handed me ready to edit files, it seems that where-ever I edit the Editor is expected do everything.
but thats ok as I need no know more then just my scope so as to make sure I am getting the correct material in the correct
format.
Perhaps I have wrongly believed that a R3d Raw files could be imported into Redalert for colour correction if this is not the case
why does it have this import facility.

I also though the point of the Red camera was that it didn't have to be telecined (especially in the case of digital broadcasting)

I apologise if any of this is naive but I am completly new to Red

Tanya

Tanya,

I will assume your resources in terms of software are somewhat limited and that you plan to transcode the data using the Red supplied software.

I'll make some suggestions based on those assumptions and also tell you how I would do it.

You can start by downloading Red Cine X and using that to make a list of all the shots on each mag that are similar in terms of their setup. Takes from the same camera position, etc.

I suggest Red Cine X because it has a nice clip viewer that's both fast and provides mouse over metadata access and it would make logging all this data pretty trivial. It'll still be monotonous, but doable without too much effort. RCX has many more useful features but it's in beta and there are some rendering issues outstanding so I don't use it much beyond this kind of logging capacity yet.

Once you have a log of all the shots from from the same setups you can then proceed to creating initial color corrections using RedAlert. I myself would do this in another app like 3CP on set, but if you don't have access to that RedAlert does a fine job.

Once the first shot in a group from the same setup is done you can save a preset for that correction and quickly apply it to all of them.

If you are going out to HD I would suggest you use Camera RAW and rec709 for your color and gamma settings. It's a perfectly acceptable option of you're going to just be editing in FCP with them and they should look okay on a 709 monitor.

Once you have applied the preset to all the clips you can then close RedAlert.

When you set the settings RedAlert wrote a file called an RSX into each r3d files directory. This holds all that color correction information. Other applications can access these files.

Next open RedRushes and using the various settings you can batch transcode all the clips to some editorial friendly format. You can use RedRushes to transcode large batches of r3d files and set it to use the rsx files to apply the color corrections you set in RedAlert, it's a simple check box.

I use ProRes422 when I output and for editorial I generally do burn in with clip name, src frame #'s, edge TC, TOD TC.

In our workflow we do this from the command line and batch process these on a small farm of machines using redline (the command line program used for transcoding r3d files).

Do a couple short clips to get the burn in and debayer quality settings to your satisfaction and then set up the whole lot and hit the go button and walk away... this will take a while.

Once you're done you'll have a lot of ProRes files you can edit with quite efficiently and you'll be on your merry way.

When we are done editing we take the Final Cut xml file and conform that in our grading suite using the r3d files instead of the prores files. We then grade the film there and output to whatever colorspace or format required.

Hope that helps somewhat.

Good luck with your project,

J

pacis totus or rather pacis ut sulum somes

HI

Martin weiss no comments were aimed or intended for you, only policy so please
acept my apologies if you were offended, I know nothing would work without moderarors and rules.

Thanks J

For the clear and precise workfow list its very helpfull (you are correct that I have limited resorses)
At the moment both versions of Redcine crash my mac (first time in 5 years)
but I see another forum post where other people are having the same issue, so I will follow that and when I solve that I will follow your advice.
Thanks again

If Redcine crashes your Mac, and Red Alert does not, you might try Clipfinder. It is a very good, batch-oriented program that I find much more useful for preliminary color-correction (dailies, one-lights) than Redcine. You can download it here for free (or a donation, if it works for you.

As I understand things, Redcine is a GPU-based program; Red Alert & Clipfinder are CPU-based programs. It might be that Redcine is not compatible with your particular GPU.
