do you want edge detail moved from color to assists?

Agreed. False color is my selected color tool 100% of the time, rendering the edge detail an invisible feature to me. Since I never use any of the assists as it stands... it might as well get moved to somewhere I can access with one button push.

As it stands, the assists work below the viewfinder image, and the color modes work on the viewfinder image. I think it belongs in color, but I also think it needs to be accessible with one button at the same time as false color.

I don't care where it goes, so long as I can have False color mapped to one user button and Edge to another.

You've never had a focus puller ask to see edge detail to line up or check a shot?

Nah, they usually have a monitor with built in peaking... or they use the 2:1 zoom... or they just use their tape measure. Focus is the same as it's always been, film or RED. It's exposure that has changed [and become so much more critical], so false color is always my #1 choice.

I think Eric hit it on the head - it doesn't matter where it goes, as long as there's a way to get at it with one button. It'd also be nice to see the red edges on the peaking get a little more dramatic.

I've got the opposite problem. I live in edge focus assist and false color has gone away. Ideally, anything should be assignable to a button. As far as menu logic goes I think the whole menu system needs a redo. All things exposure together, all things sound together, all things focus together, all things "look" together... especially new users aren't going to understand "system", vs "project" vs. this type of focus tool or that type of focus tool.

There's a reason cameras have a lot of buttons - cause there's a lot of stuff you want one click access to. EPIC should have more programmable buttons IMHO.

Totally agree. After six months I still find myself pushing the wrong buttons and looking for functions.

As for focus assist: please make it better visible or customizable and put it somewhere under 'monitor'.

That's exactly how I feel. And if not that, then the ability to hit the button once and have it go to False Color, hit it again and have it go to Edge Highlight.

false color, edge detail, and focus assist, and even waveform
would be nice to map them to a user button...even if you have to cycle through them

I don't care as long as I can't adjust the thickness of the outline. Right now it's just too thin to do me any good.

Thicker outline and im in. In the meantime false color is much more useful to me.

I agree the color and intensity should be adjustable but I've gotten the hang of the thin lines and now find myself trusting the edge assist more than anything else. The LCD has become usable as a focus tool for me.

So...

Let me first say. I trust my tape measure. (if I am sure the camera is properly back focused and I know the lens has been checked)

Past that, I trust my eye to pull details in the monitor.
Right behind that I pop the edge detail on for a sec to verify.

In extreme situations I have run with it on. If there is a lot of detail in a pattern it is fantastic. I was shooting dogs, close up wide open and I could watch the red flow across their fur as the focus racked across them.

Today I had a man in a stripped shirt again, the red edge is obvious.

Would it be nice to have it a bit thicker? Sure. If I have to choose one, which I do right now.... False Color hands down. If you want both all the time your best bet is to radio map one of the back buttons to the color menu.

I have been steering away from false color more and more and just trusting my experience vs the histo.
Who know's the next build might have a new tool and then it's game on again.

I use the edge detail a lot. It combined with the focus histogram make it pretty hard to miss focus. All depends on what and how you are shooting. For ENG, doc, type stuff run n'gun, it's a must.

It probably should be moved from color to assists, but at this point I'm used to where it's at and don't really care as long as I can map it to a button. Hey, I think I've read that same comment a few times now. I think it originally got placed into the color menu because edge highlight originally was only available as the sharp red edges over a B&W image -- it was another color overlay mode and not simply an addition of red highlights to the current view.
