  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Please release upgrade list for Dragon

So I feel like i've been told by everyone at Red that my camera is up for an upgrade anytime now since December. My camera has been giving me the green screen of death since August, which hasn't made the camera inoperable as i can just use a SDI or HDMI monitor as a replacement but and i've been holding off sending my camera in as i'm told by my rep, red support, and everyone else that "you'll be up for an update soon, you are high on the list".

No i don't care if it take another month or so for me to get my upgrade, and i don't care that red give other reduser perks and early place in line because god knows all of them deserve it. I just would like to know what is means to be on the list. I know there is another trend where people have listed their order timestamps and are using that as a guide but i would like to see red release something that states at least a count down that i can check to see where am at in the queue and so that I can plan my shooting life accordingly. I don't mind renting other people dragons when i have a budget but a lot of stuff i do is a labor of love and i have a a lot of shoots that i would like to shoot with the my own dragon. I also love my Epic MX sensor and happy to keep using it and willing to send it in to get repaired so that i can keep using it at it's full potential if i knew that 1,000 or 2,000 people are still in front of me.

Again i'm okay with delays and issues and favors. I just would like to know and i'm sure other users would to where we all stand in the grand scheme of things.

If my request is crazy or just too much of a hassle to comply with that is fine. I've learned the art of patience, but haven't master seeing in the dark :-)

Also it will probably be my luck that once i post this i'll get and email saying my camera is ready for an upgrade and i'll feel like a total ass, but i think all red suer would like to see something that can better help them navigate their shooting lives.
 
+1.... It would be great to have some kind of rough indication how many more weeks or months before our Epic-X transforms into a Dragon. :)
 
I hear ya, I was one of the first people at the NAB booth and was told not to worry about getting my upgrade order in asap since it was being done by serial #...Only till later that day did I find out it was by order # and not serial #. Wish there was some better communication overall. I'm not too far down the list but have no idea if my number is coming up next week or in several months.
 
8am at the booth on 8th April and told Dragons would be serial number order and wasn't open yet. No one knew what the procedure was.

Found out at 11.30 am that orders were open from 10am online and was date/time stamped free for all.

I should have stayed in the UK and watched Reduser instead if paying to go NAB. Despite bring one of the earliest adopters in the UK since 2006 I find myself way down the list while anyone who bought an M recently and who happened to be online is now ahead if me.

Not great for a rental company known for RED and being first and best. Getting loads if calls for big projects I can't now service.

The "buy a carbon if you're a rental company" doesn't cut it when you have 10 cameras due for upgrade (plus multiple Rocket X /new media etc)

Really bloody annoying.
 
Agreed i thought serial number and then was told timestamp. Thats why i would like to know where i am in line. Just want to plan.

Not necessarily. If you were an "early adopter" and owned an X you were allowed to order at the same time as the M owners. I actually ordered the upgrade for my X first, then ordered the upgrade for my M a few minutes later.
 
For what it is worth.

We are all waiting and that is just the way it goes. When your number comes up it comes up. I know it requires patience. The thing to consider is that you will have a more complete dragon when it ships and you won't have to ship it back for OLPF etc. Reds selection of early dragon adopter was very good and they have served the community well.

i tried like heck to get on that list, but it's up to RED how they want to roll out their technology.

i don't think they will release a list like this for many reasons, business wise and also to protect privacy of their customers. Many people don't want to release their time stamp information as it's nobody's business.

It not just individual users. There are a ton of production houses that don't need to be letting the world know when a shipment of Dragons is coming in.

I'm glad they've always been respectful and generous to early adopters.

When the call comes, it comes. It's a tough wait, but that's the way she goes.

I don't want them to release a list. Just let me know how many people or epics are ahead of me. I should've clarified that.
I'm happy that red has early adopters privileges and agree with them too. Just want to get an idea of when.

I've been patience and plan on still being, but it hard when people at the red camp tease me with "coming soon to you" that all.

Respect to everyone at red and i know the bomb reps can't help as their hands are tied and as much they wish they could tell us they cant.

and for what its worth David. I agree with you about everything just wrote the first post in a moment of frustration :-).

I have to say, my bomb squad rep has been awesome. We are in touch all the time, but he can't give me any precise info and everything is a moving target. I honestly thought that after we saw some dragon footage in August we'd be seeing a rollout by November like with epic MX.

Im actually close on some list and it's all ready to go, this just gives me some extra time to plan and figure out what equipment I need to pull together to update my fast turnaround workflow. I think in about six months will be a good time to upgrade when the dust settles a bit on how much the post transition costs are going to add up over the Dragon upgrade cost.

I love my epic so much. I'm really curious to see if they offer an OLPF upgrade for epic MX because I'd love to see the new OLPF on regular epic as well as it looks more like a problem solved in the optical path rather than purely a sensor specific thing because Dragons out there now have the MX OLPF and look awesome. Any improvement to the OLPF should improve existing epics as well.

I believe its always a moving target. So many variables like:

1. Not all customers can send the camera right away when they're number comes up.
2. During inspection, issues with your camera are discovered.
3. perhaps slow yields of the sensor.
4. Too many camera arriving at once.
5. I'm sure there can be many more...

So they may have a list of when they contact you, but it really doesn't mean they know when it's on the line.

I think they have bigger fish to fry. This has to be done right and to the right people and the right time. I think Redusers are a pretty small part of reds business now and it's important for them to roll this out right. A lot has happened at RED since the EPIC was released.

In many ways it's like a new company with a new camera and it feels a bit that way with this product launch.

I agree that more communication would be helpful. Even just a ballbark estimate would be great.
 
Plan for six months from now and if it happens sooner, great!

Even though we might have thought it would happen by now, it's better to just forget about it until you get an email in your inbox.

How can I possible plan for six months with any confidence? Six months would be fine. Three months would be fine. Having zero idea if either is realistic is hard. Just a bit more information here would be really helpful.

Just sayin.
