Hey guys,
Just received my BT R1 today and was super excited; however that has turned to despair since the HDMI out port does not seem to work. This is major for me as it is at present the only monitoring option I have. :( At first I thought I must have done the Nikon mount installation wrong, but when I play back my SSD on my computer it's definitely recording, but I have no way of monitoring it.

What are my options? As a film student money is tight and I can't afford a Red EVF/LCD. Should I look at an SDI to HDMI adapter? What does the BNC to DIN cable that came with the camera do? Can that be hooked up to a monitor in the meantime?

We are planning to shoot our first feature with the camera from Jan 3, so I don't have time to send it back for repairs :(

Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated.

VERY DISSAPOINTED

First, try a different HDMI monitor...the HDMI output of the R1 does not work with some monitors.

make sure the HDMI output is set to video not menus [DVI]

The output is 1280x720 at 60 hz. Most HDMI monitors can accept that, but check your monitor's specs and see if that resolution is accepted.

Wich monitor are you using?
Did you check your monitoring settings in the Red menu?
Did you activated it the monitoring function?
50 Hz or 60 Hz, it's important to select the apropriate one.

Edit Hé hé J.P you beat me on that one.

Hi Matt. Don't be too disappointed yet  This is a high end professional camera, and as such it is specific in it's interface requirements.

You can look at an HD-SDI to HDMI adapter, but the adapter must accept true progressive 720p HD-SDI signals in the frequency of your country's video system. So if your country is PAL, it's likely 50Hz, so you would set the output of the R1 to 720p 50Hz. Or if you're in a NTSC country then 60Hz. The R1 does not output Sony style PsF signals, which some adapters need to work.

Or as Tom already said, some monitors are fussier than others about the type of HDMI signal the R1 puts out - try another (quite often computer monitors with HDMI can work), and/or change your monitor input settings.
Or as J.P and Brice said - check your R1 settings.

The BNC to DIN cable is for adapting the DIN video connectors on the camera to standard BNC connector for use with HD-SDI cables and equipment. The cable is quite thin, and therefore vulnerable, so if you attach a heavier HD-SDI cable to it, make sure you cable tie or otherwise secure the HD-SDI cable so that if someone steps or yanks on it it won't pull on the BNC-DIN cable. Ideally you should have a spare or two of this cable in case it does get damaged on a shoot. Down the line, when funds allow, you may well want to source Element Technica's video break out box - expensive, but they do come up for sale on Reduser secondhand. Others have fashioned cheap metal brackets to secure the BNC end of the cable to help prevent damage.

Good luck, and welcome to the Red users!

Many thanks for the suggestions guys. I have reloaded the firmware and tried numerous monitors and TVs, but the best that has happened is a micro-second flash of the Red Mysterium logo I think it was. I also tried an HDMI-DVI connector but that hasn't worked either.
Since I live in Australia I played aroud with the 50/59.97 Hz settings and other monitor settings but neither seem to have any effect.
I realise the BT R1 is second hand, but I assumed the HDMI port would work? Although Dan Kanes said he finds 50% of Red rental cameras he's used have a broken HDMI port.

Any other suggestions would be most welcomed,
Many thanks

The video out may be set to hd-sdi rather than HDMI. Do you have an hd-sdi monitor you can borrow to test?

Also, did you try multiple HDMI cables? Those cables break easily and can be very finicky. Lastly, what brand and model monitor are you using?

Buy a small HD monitor with HDSDI and you wont look back.

Or you can buy a second hand RED ONE monitor pretty cheap these days. I personally found the HDMI port way too flimsy and unstable to use in a professional environment.

I contacted my bomb squad member. Is that the same?

Maybe, but I don't think so, unless they said otherwise. If you go through the red.com site, under support, there is a place to enter an incident. As I understand it, any technical issues are routed to a tech 24 hrs/day (pager system). Your BT has a warranty - you will want to make sure that they are aware of the issue and can work with you to get it resolved. The BT gear is supposed to have gone through QC prior to shipping (which is why it takes a while to get these). I don't have any personal experience with support, but it seems that those who do have a positive experience.

Thanks guys, have ordered a smallHD SDI but it's frustrating that I can't use my camera until it turns up!

Is there a list of supported/unsupported monitors anywhere?

THANKS

I have a similar problem. I have a Marshall 7inch hdmi monitor and mine shows up in 720p mode but with limited menu options displayed on the monitor. When I swith the red menu to dvi I see more settings but the screen turn purple and grayed out. I think I read that the red one has to have a evf or red monitor to have the menu settings show up. Any ideas? Thanks

I would get the adapter but nothing I have is DVI. My monitor is hdmi and so is the red. Is my best bet another monitor?

I have a Small HD DP4 and have no issues with everything showing up via hdmi. My only issue with the hdmi is the looseness of the connector on the camera end.

I got the smallHD dp6 and it works with SDI, but my HDMI seems to be broken, since I can't get anything from dp6 or half a dozen other monitors. However the SDI ports all work and I also got am SDI to HDMI converter so I can hook up a director's monitor.

HDMI on any camera is a PITA. It's fine if you plug it into your TV and it just sits there, but for moving around it's so unstable.
