  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Please Change In Build 16

I was under the impression that the user defined buttons (#1 and #2 near the power switch),were programable for any combination of features? I was planning on setting one up for 60fps @3K, which I plan on needing quite often.

Is this not possible?

Red, any answer? Are you there...?

Red, any answer? Are you there...?

Great postings, and no official reaction from Red... Maybe Mark is asking what they thought will be Build 17!:innocent:

A perfect example of what Mark's talking about: A month ago, I was on a runway in Vegas waiting for a plane to come in. The plane was on its downwind leg and we had one chance to get it right. I was on B camera - A camera was on the runway and the plane was going to fly directly overhead.

Two minutes before the plane was set to touch down, the director decided he wanted A camera at 60fps. The A camera team dove into the menus, changed the resolution to 3K and tried to change the project frame rate to 59.94. With about a minute left, I started getting panicked radio calls from the A camera team complaining about the "invalid project settings" warning they were getting. Having to use both of my hands on B camera, I bit my mic and conveyed the proper instructions as quickly as possible. They were still dialing in the Varispeed frame rate when the plane touched down.

D'OH!!!

So yeah, it does happen. This isn't the only time it's happened, just the most extreme and costly.

Even renaming "project frame rate" to "project time base" might help. It's a short term solution [I'd still like to see a way to change the resolution from the sensor menu in the long term], but it might make people think twice when they're adjusting settings. "Project Time Base" sounds more threatening than frame rate... it's not a term people have had to deal with on film bodies before, so they'd probably stay away from it.

Not yet. But cleary the buttons are intended to be programmable.

YES!!!

Even just TIMEBASE and FRAMERATE - good call Brook!

PLEASE PUT A RESOLUTION BUTTON IN THE SENSOR MENU

Here's why -

#1: right now, you have to access TWO separate menus to switch from 4K to 3K or 2K for slow motion - you should be able to go into ONE MENU - change the frame rate and change the resolution. Period. End of discussion.

#2: The most COMMON MISTAKE that creates DUPLICATE FILENAMES happens when someone goes into the PROJECT MENU to get to slow motion. They change the resolution - and then - it just seems logical to change the FRAMERATE right there - problem is - that frame rate is the PROJECT FRAMERATE - and if you turn it, and then turn it back, you RESET you REEL back to 001 - and this create a DUPLICATE FILENAME - MANY people don't know this.

#3: The solution is SIMPLE. Keep EVERYTHING THE SAME in the Project Settings Menu - simply ADD a RESOLUTION BUTTON in the SENSOR MENU next to VARISPEED. Now, your TECH can tell the camera department - "just don't touch the 'project settings menu'"

Thanks in advance for your attention to this matter!

Mark,

thats very true points and indeed explains some yet misunderstood behavior on our crews here, seeing the duplicate file names and not really knowing what is going on (so far, thanks).

Cleaning up the menus is strictly a convenient approach.

Another big point I never understood and which I really want to looked after:

Why do we have to "format" media in the project rate?
Why can we not simply mix all formats in one media, changing at will?
A RED DRIVE is useless if you need to shoot different modes at the directors desires. And I am pretty anxious that some team members out there play in the menus, put the cameras into modes where the currently attached media is rate "invalid" and gets reformatted to match the settings, but loosing quite a bit of shots on them. Happend over here once, luckily just once :)

I do not really see the reason why the media needs to be reformatted, as you can mix the formats on a RED DRIVE easily when we use it simply as on-set backup drive for differently formatted CF media. And attaching the RED DRIVE back (in mixed media) to the RED ONE still allows to play back this footage, so where is the trick?

I hope this is one of the yet not explained mysteries that 16 will resolve :)

Cheers,
Axel

menu reorganization.

menu reorganization.

i also think it is very cumbersome to use 2 completely different menus and switch fps by fps when you only really want to jump from normal to double to full fps most of the time 24 - 48 - 60 - 120. i think it takes too long and i think audio could also be simplified into only one menu. i don't really think it makes sense in it's current iteration. please redesign the menu a little and make this more user friendly.

I missed a slow mo shot today for exactly this reason. Luckiky, I got the shot in realtime, but you can speed up slow mo to get real time, so I was bummed that I didn't get the benefits of both real time and slow mo because I wasn't able to get through the menus fast enough.

If Red is ever to be a true run and gun camera, it must have this feature.

Thanks for the post, Offhollwywood.

Yes, I agree with Mark.

I would add, that aspect ratio and resolution should be two separate menu items. Had a big varispeed stunt shot last night where C-cam accidentally set the format to 3K 16:9 instead of 2:1, pooching the whole dailies workflow for that shot. PITA... but if 2K/3K/4K and 2:1/16:9/ANA were in separate menus it wouldn't have happened.

Maybe keep aspect ration in the Project setting, and move resolution to the Sensor menu (next to Varispeed etc.) ?

Another pet peeve: TC JAM on the back of the camera... only updates after hitting Record. So the sound dep't wants to roll a sound tone take every now and again to check Jam, but since Camera & Scripty are tracking clip # with sc/tk in their reports, it creates all kinds of confusion.

That display should just update if the camera is jammed and not need to roll...

Aperture Display on LCD and EVF.

Exposure to adjuust T Stops to get the normal , under or over how many stops etc.

Like other HD Camera shown the Square ( Normal ) Up Triangle with T stops reading ( Over ) and down Triangle with T- Stops reading ( under ) to give guild lines of what we are shooting with our lenses.

Remember that , it's quite a lot of RED owners have noy yest get the EVF ?

How you can shoot without a Viewfinder under the SUN light ?

I do not want to build a RED hot in Black Tent for my shootings. Will all the RED shooters do ?

Couple things after a few days shooting.

Using Varispeed needs to be quicker, Everything about it. I wish I could jump through the speeds faster. Instead of a spin, if I could bump the joystick left or right to jump by 10 fps that would be great. Since the UI can't update fast enough there should be a way we could set presets (more later) and (MAJOR) It also needs to remember your last speed.

Once we can assign uses to the user 1 & 2 buttons I'd love to be able to toggle varispeed instantly and/or cycle through a couple preset speeds.

Using the relative shutter mode and timelapse mode, the shutter gets stuck. If I go into timelapse mode, and change the shutter speed, shoot, then exit timelapse mode, the shutter setting sticks if your in whatever shutter you set. The only way to change it is re-enable timelapse mode and shift the shutter back to 180, then exit.

This is a long shot, but if I could custom configure a "user" menu with a XML file that would be awesome. Like I would have a short list of menu options, and I could paste them into a file that would build a custom menu. If I could ht the User button to activate it, then I could get at my most used menu functions super quick.

I can't wait for 16, 17, 18, etc. Loving the camera.
