  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Playing with the Forged Carbon Fiber Weapon and it's AWESOME!

I've intrigued at least three of my friends with that 5000 Weapon ISO, all they want is an r3d :)

Its hard to make judgments based on the TIFFs since don't really have much context. What I can say comparing the C001 vs. C003 is that there is a lot less blue noise in C001 when zooming in, which is great! Some of the dark areas appear crushed though. Maybe if the noise was gone from C003 it would be just as crushed.

There is a lot less clipping around the lights on the phones in C001 vs. C003. There is still some, but greatly reduced.

Also, some odd flaring or reflections in the C001. I have attached a pic of them.

Beyond that, I am excited and can't wait to get my EPIC upgraded. I can easily test for the smear as the Xyla 21 chart makes the smear obvious.

Are you guys this easily fooled? No wonder Red's hype machine is such a success. :001_rolleyes:
No, Iso 1280 is not suddenly iso 5000. Perhaps by adding noise reduction / ADD / DEB. But that doesnt count.

I think a lot of us want to see this cleaner shadow announcement and CMOS smear reduction on the Weapon. Especially after the Epic to Dragon upgrade, a lot of us were told 2000 ISO would be the same as 800 ISO.

Lets wait till both R3Ds are posted. And to be fair, RED has nothing todo with this particular hype. Would love to see these R3Ds!!

I think nooe are fooled, but a lot would be curious. We use these things for a living.

Changes count for our living, thus interest is kinda a professional necessity when changes come in areas that have been used to talk down RED...

That said, there are few places I meet so much FUD around RED as I do on this forum...

Oh the Irony!

Now, let's have an R3D party!

Here is the Weapon R3D that everyone has been waiting for. Here is a 2nd R3D from Weapon as well.

Thank you again Patrick for sharing this with us!

WOW - Weapon is significantly cleaner. That 5000 ISO shoot looks like 1600...

This is a little insane.

IS anyone else looking at this?

The A001_C002 clip is basically "clean" at 4000 iso, which is blowing my mind. And extremely usable at 5000 iso.

Looks like Weapon Body is SIGNIFICANTLY cleaner than Epic body...with Dragon sensor.

AND...there's no DC2 blue channel artifacting.

This is starting to make my hunches feel correct - that Weapon is the "true" expression of the Dragon sensor...across the board (impoved signal noise, color processing).

AND...this is reminding me of the performance upgrades from RED ONE body to EPIC body...

This new body may be a bigger deal than many realized...

Now the question is, is this the same for the Magnesium version? It would probably create a lot of confusion if not...

I agree it looks nice and promising, but I would feel better seeing someone post side-by-side tests to be more confident.

That would breed more confidence, although the difference is more than noticeable. I'm amazed and I know I'm not alone... the C002 clip at 4000 ISO compared to the C003 clip says it all.

Am I the only one not seeing a real difference noise-wise between the side-by-sides? The black level looks a little different between the two, like if the Epic was maybe handling the flare worse, but not the noise level - at least not on the multi-stop scale others seem to be seeing. The lack of blue oversaturation with DC2 on the Weapon is cool, though.

But here's two 100% crops of roughly center-ish frame, which conveniently has black, white, and some color. I put both clips at 5000 ISO, 5600K, DC1, and RG3:

Can you tell which is which? I'm not convinced that Weapon is any significantly cleaner than Epic.

No idea which is which, but i prefer the top one. Really though, I'm going to wait a few month as red works out a standard manufacturing process for the weapon and will look at meaningful tests that where done in controlled circumstances at that time(i.e. late September I think is a good time to really have some controlled test).

Weapon is the top one.
